Excerpt from Pender Among the Residents Captain Chaffinch, being of a musical turn, paused for a moment outside Miss Foy's small house, or rather, outside the gate of her garden. Certain strains, on his approach, had revealed themselves as the opening bars of the waltz from Faust. They came brightly tripping to his ear, but of a sudden faltered, made a blind stagger at recovery, and - abruptly ceased. The captain, whistling the conclusion of the air for himself, passed on down the street, while the piano, unabashed, started upon a second attempt. The piano was old, and its voice most tremulous and cracked. Some of the keys had a disconcerting habit, when struck, of not returning to their original position. One or two of them, even beneath the firm touch of Miss Adeline Burton, refused to respond at all. On these occasions a remote and wiry tinkle was all that could be heard, sounding from unfathomable depths within, but this plaintive tinkle, so feeble, so helpless, had no effect upon the younger Miss Burton; she but pounded the harder, with a joyous determination that set the brass candlesticks dancing, and irritated her instructress nearly to the point of tears. Every Tuesday and Friday Adeline Burton came for a music lesson, and every Tuesday and Friday, at the same point, in the same way, she broke down. Miss Foy always knew that she would. She waited for the crash and jangle of wrong notes with nerves on edge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. While discussions in the field of Irish Studies traditionally gravitate towards themes of struggle, oppression and death, the present book originates from a contradictory impulse. Without losing sight of Ireland’s troubled history and the complexities that shape its present, it centres on instances of playfulness, light(ness) and air in Irish literature and culture. Refracted through the prism of contemporary philosophy (notably of Italo Calvino, Luce Irigaray and María Lugones), these categories serve as the basis for thirteen essays by academics from Poland, the UK, Germany and Spain. Some of these offer fresh readings of such seminal authors as W. B. Yeats, Louis MacNeice, Seamus Heaney and John Banville; others look at lesser-known figures, such as Eimar O’Duffy and Forrest Reid, who, before now, have received little scholarly attention.

The talented William Dorsey Pender is a prime example of the advantage held by the Confederacy in junior-level commanders during the opening months of the Civil War. Pender, a native North Carolinian, graduated in the top half of the West Point class of 1856. One of the first Southern-born officers to offer his services to the Confederacy. Pender first came to prominence during the Seven DaysÕ Battles, when a number of junior Confederate officers took bold action to counter the battlefield errors of some of their better-known superiors. Pender soon developed a reputation as Robert E. LeeÕs favorite brigade commander. After further capable service at Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, Pender was promoted to divisional command. Arriving at Gettysburg on the first day of the battle, PenderÕs troops from Georgia, South Carolina and his own North Carolina played a major role in driving the veteran Union I Corps from the town. Unfortunately, Pender sustained what at first seemed a minor wound later in the battle and died of complications after the Confederate retreat back to Virginia. The inability of the less-populous Confederacy to replace key figures such as Pender was an important cause of the ultimate Southern defeat.

Pender Denton was born in a bordello. His mother, a sex-worker, taught him to steal. He grew up with little regard for "normal" society. He was a pre-teen when he killed his first man. Pender wanders the lawless, post civil war west and survives by stealing and selling horses. He meets, and insults, famous outlaw Jesse James---and lives to tell about it. Pender also met Bill Dalton, of the Wild Bunch/Dalton Gang. Bill claims to be Pender's father. Pender gains a friend, a crime partner, and a life partner when he meets Johnnie Sweetwater. Sweetwater was born a member of a California Shoshone native tribe. He had been kidnapped by missionaries who forced him into one of their schools and robbed him of his tribal legacy. The two men, both outcasts from all the so-called civilized aspects of the old west, live and travel together. They rob banks and trains. They steal horses. They fight bloody battles with other outlaws who try to steal the pair's ill-gotten loot. However, they also restore stolen wages to a crew of trail riders, risk their lives to find a neighbor's lost son, rescue a young girl who was being held hostage, and save the livelihoods of a stranded band of Irish and Chinese railroad workers. Pender Denton--Outlaw is an historically accurate look at the wild west in America, but above all, it is a very human story of two men and their adventures.
