Pemikiran, pemahaman dan empati merupakan antara kemahiran utama dalam ilmu sejarah yang perlu dikuasai oleh sejarawan, para pendidik dan warga pendidikan sejarah. Pengajaran dan pembelajarannya memerlukan penglibatan interaktif ketiga-tiga domain kognitif, afektif dan psikomotor, supaya sesuatu peristiwa atau tindakan seseorang tokoh itu boleh diketahui dengan lebih lanjut, difahami dengan lebih mendalam, dan difikirkan sebab-musababnya. Kedinamikan ilmu sejarah adalah pada kecenderungan dan kemahiran dalam menyiasat, menyoal, menaakul serta mentafsir sesuatu peristiwa atau tindakan seseorang tokoh, berasaskan bukti yang konkrit. Tujuannya adalah untuk membolehkan seseorang memahami sejarah dengan lebih berhemah, mengambil pengajaran dan iktibar daripada pengalaman lampau, mengaitkannya dengan keadaan masa kini sebagai persediaan untuk masa hadapan yang lebih sejahtera. Garapan atau rumusan ketiga-tiga unsur sejarah yang diketengahkan oleh penyelidik dan penyelidikan tempatan serta antarabangsa, memerlukan kearifan berfikir acuan tempatan bagi mengisi keperluan Pendidikan Abad ke-21 dan menangani tuntutan Revolusi Industri 4.0.
