Buku ini merupakan pengantar atau kajian awal bagi siapa pun yang hendak mengembangkan Pendidikan Agama Islam (PAI) dari berbagai sudut pandang; filsafat, psikologi, sosiologi, dan institusi. Tujuannya adalah agar pendidikan Agama Islam dapat berkembang secara dinamis di tengah krisis kebangsaan yang multidimensi. Sungguh pun demikian, bukan berarti pengembangan PAI bisa dilakukan secara serampangan. Yakni, mengadopsi segala hal yang datang dari “luar” tanpa seleksi yang cermat. Bagaimanapun, PAI masih dihadapkan pada permasalahan dan kenyataan yang kompleks. Di antaranya persoalan normatif-ideologi, perbedaan kondisi alam, ekonomi, sosio-kultural, dan kesiapan semua pihak terutama masyarakat dalam menghadapi perubahan-perubahan. Bisa dikatakan, pengembangan sistem pendidikan Islam akan banyak menyentuh dimensi-dimensi normatif-ideologis, filosofis, psikologis,sosiologis, historis, kultural, ekonomi, dan bahkan kebijakan politik. Dalam usaha mengatasi persoalan-persoalan di atas, penulis mencoba memberikan tawaran-tawaran gagasan tentang pengembangan PAI dari berbagai perspektif. Selain itu, penulis berharap buku ini bisa menjadi titik tolak dan landasaran yang kokoh bagi pelaksana Pendidikan Agama Islam, pengembang, dan penentu kebijakan pendidikan dalam mengembangkan serta menyelenggarakan program PAI, baik di sekolah-sekolah, madrasah, pesantren maupun di perguruan tinggi.
