Penggunaan modalitas sinar-X di bidang radiologi kedokteran gigi telah berkembang pesat, salah satunya adalah pesawat sinar-X handheld portabel. Selain memiliki manfaat yang sangat besar dalam penentuan diagnosis dan rencana perawatan, sifat sinar-X juga memiliki energi besar sehingga mampu menembus jarak lebih jauh dan kemampuannya menyebabkan kerusakan biologis pada jaringan hidup, maka perlu disadari bahwa penggunaan sinar-X yang tidak sesuai dengan kaidah proteksi radiasi akan menimbulkan suatu dampak negatif. Oleh sebab diperlukan evaluasi mendalam terhadap suatu modalitas, prosedur, dan teknik baru yang menggunakan radiasi pengion khususnya sinar-X. Banyak kekurangpahaman secara menyeluruh mengenai fungsi dan protokol keamanan penggunaan pesawat sinar-X ini terutama dalam hal penerapan prinsip proteksi radiasi, baik untuk operator maupun pasien terhadap paparan radiasi pengion. Hal ini menjadi perhatian penting karena dalam pengoperasian pesawat sinar-X handheld portabel ini, operator harus memegang atau menggenggam perangkat selama paparan media kepada pasien, operator tidak dapat mengambil jarak yang cukup dari area sumber sinar-X sehingga radiasi hambur (scattered radiation) sulit dihindari. Dibutuhkan suatu kesadaran proteksi radiasi dalam penggunaan modalitas sinar-X ini. Perizinan penggunaan modalitas radiografi menjadi suatu hal yang wajib dipenuhi oleh pengguna. Di Indonesia sendiri segala urusan perizinan modalitas radiografi diatur dan diawasi oleh BAPETEN. Untuk penggunaan pesawat sinar-X handheld portabel diatur dalam “Peraturan BAPETEN Nomor 4 Tahun 2020 tentang Keselamatan Radiasi pada Penggunaan Pesawat Sinar-X dalam Radiologi Diagnostik dan Intervensionar BAPETEN belum merekomen-dasikan dan mengizinkan sama sekali penggu-naan pesawat sinar-X handheld portabel untuk kebutuhan pemeriksaan rutin atau pemeriksaan pada praktik dokter gigi. Penggunaan pesawat sinar-X pada praktik pribadi, praktik bersama, klinik ataupun rumah sakit yang ideal diperlukan perizinan sesuai dengan spesifikasi dan peraturan BAPETEN yang bertujuan agar instalasi radiodiagnosis tersebut bermanfaat sebagai penunjang diagnosis, dan terdapat jaminan keamanan pesawat sinar-X bagi dokter, pasien,dan lingkungan.
