The hegemonic model of democracy, while prevailing on aglobal scale, guarantees no more than low-intensity democracy. The political history of the twentieth century can be viewed as the history of democracy’s struggle against its external enemies: fascism and communism. This struggle ended with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet regime. Some people think that democracy now faces new enemies: Islamic fundamentalism, religious extremism and international terrorism and that this is the struggle that will define our times. Todorov disagrees: the biggest threat to democracy today is democracy itself. Its enemies are within: what the ancient Greeks called 'hubris'. Todorov argues that certain democratic values have been distorted and pushed to an extreme that serves the interests of dominant states and powerful individuals. In the name of ‘democracy’ and ‘human rights’, the United States and some European countries have embarked on a crusade to enlighten some foreign populations through the use of force. Yet this mission to ‘help’ others has led to Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo, to large-scale destruction and loss of life and to a moral crisis of growing proportions. The defence of freedom, if unlimited, can lead to the tyranny of individuals. Drawing on recent history as well as his own experience of growing up in a totalitarian regime, Todorov returns to examples borrowed from the Western canon: from a dispute between Augustine and Pelagius to the fierce debates among Enlightenment thinkers to explore the origin of these perversions of democracy. He argues compellingly that the real democratic ideal is to be found in the delicate, ever-changing balance between competing principles, popular sovereignty, freedom and progress. When one of these elements breaks free and turns into an over-riding principle, it becomes dangerous: populism, ultra-liberalism and messianism, the inner enemies of democracy.

Quiere poner el acento en las percepciones, en las impresiones y emociones, así como en su contacto con los conceptos y los discursos en busca de lo que se puede compartir. El libro, además, pretende ser un recurso interdisciplinario, para repensar lo político, lo social y lo cultural. No tiene la pretensión de proponer una teoría nueva, una formula única, sino poner en cuestión el tema de la identidad y la diferencia en tres ritmos: el primero, el ritmo intimo individual de cada lector, su predisposición a participar en esta conversación; el segundo ritmo serán los préstamos entre disciplinas, y el tercero, la puesta en común y reinterpretación de esta escucha por parte del lector para renovar el imaginario social en la continuidad y el movimiento. Pensar la mezcla invitará el lector a una reflexión sobre la identidad y la diferencia a partir de sus propias vivencias, para situar la identificación como un proceso en el cual se necesita un «ellos» para pensar un «nosotros». El relato en sí pretende una reflexión a partir de una larga experiencia personal dedicada a la descripción y la comprensión de la mezcla y la identidad en sus diferentes formas, procesos y dinámicas.

El eslogan «Volver a pensar la educación» quiere ser la expresión de una necesidad imperiosa para todas aquellas personas relacionadas de distinta forma con las ideas y prácticas educativas que se sienten inseguras desde un punto de vista intelectual, ético y práctico en un mundo cambiante. Personas que no pueden disponer de referentes claros acerca de las formas de desarrollo científico y cultural de los pueblos, de modelos sociales con los que sentirse comprometidas y al servicio de los cuales poner un proyecto educativo coherente. La perplejidad y la incertidumbre son el resultado de apreciar un mundo que muestra cada vez con más crudeza ciertos rasgos de irracionalidad, de desigualdad entre grupos e individuos, así como una injusta distribución de todos los bienes, incluida la educación. Muy diversas circunstancias hacen imprescindible hoy una reflexión sobre la realidad educativa y los fundamentos que le proporcionan sus justificaciones racionales y éticas. ¿En qué consiste lo que puede ser conocimiento relevante en la sociedad actual? ¿Cuáles son los valores que se deben difundir? ¿Qué competencias conviene estimular en ciudadanas y ciudadanos para que puedan participar en un mundo que, cada vez más, tiende a ocultarles los mecanismos que explican su funcionamiento, restándoles posibilidades de consciencia y de participación comprometida y creadora? ¿Qué modelo de institución puede facilitar mejor un renovado proyecto educativo? ¿Qué prácticas son coherentes con esas pretensiones? Estas son algunas de las preguntas que no tienen hoy fácil réspuesta ya las que intentan responder estos dos volúmenes. Pocas veces en una misma obra se han unido tantas voces ofreciendo materiales inéditos y puntos de vista renovados.
