This book presents a comprehensive and detailed exploration of the relationship between the thought of G.W.F. Hegel and that of John McDowell, the latter of whom is widely considered to be one of the most influential living analytic philosophers. It serves as a point of entry in McDowell’s and Hegel’s philosophy, and a substantial contribution to ongoing debates on perceptual experience and perceptual justification, naturalism, human freedom and action. The chapters gathered in this volume, as well as McDowell’s responses, make it clear that McDowell’s work paves the way for an original reading of Hegel’s texts. His conceptual framework allows for new interpretive possibilities in Hegel’s philosophy which, until now, have remained largely unexplored. Moreover, these interpretations shed light on various aspects of continuity and discontinuity between the philosophies of these two authors, thus defining more clearly their positions on specific issues. In addition, they allow us to see Hegel’s thought as containing a number of conceptual tools that might be useful for advancing McDowell’s own philosophy and contemporary philosophy in general.

We are still looking for a satisfactory definition of what makes an individual being a human individual. The understanding of human beings in terms of organism does not seem to be satisfactory, because of its reductionistic flavor. It satisfies our need for autonomy and benefits our lives thanks to its medical applications, but it disappoints our needs for conscious and free, self-determination. For similar reasons, i.e. because of its anti-libertarian tone, an organicistic understanding of the relationship between individual and society has also been rejected, although no truly satisfactory alternative for harmonizing individual and social wellness has been put forth. Thus, a reassessment of the very concepts of individual and organism is needed. In this book, the authors present a specific line of thought which started with Leibniz' concept of monad in 17th century, continued through Kant and Hegel, and as a result reached the first Eastern country to attempt to assimilate, as well as confront, with Western philosophy and sciences, i.e. Japan. The line of thought we are tracing has gone on to become one the main voices in current debates in the philosophy of biology, as well as philosophical anthropology, and social philosophy. As a whole, the volume offers a both historical, and systematic account of one specific understanding of individuals and their environment, which tries to put together its natural embedding, as well as its dialectical nature. Such a historical, systematic map will also allow to better evaluate how life sciences impact our view of our individual lives, of human activities, of institutions, politics, and, finally, of humankind in general.

Questa edizione contiene una nuova postfazione del traduttore, una cronologia della vita e delle opere di Heidegger, un indice filosofico dei principali concetti heideggeriani e una guida alla terminologia esistenziale degli esistenzialisti del XIX e XX secolo. Questa traduzione è stata concepita per garantire la leggibilità e l'accessibilità alla filosofia enigmatica e densa di Heidegger. Sentieri di legno è una raccolta di saggi che riflettono su questioni filosofiche ed esistenziali attraverso l'analisi dell'arte, della poesia e della storia. Il titolo originale tedesco "Holzwege" si riferisce ai sentieri di disboscamento delle foreste tedesche, che chiunque abbia fatto escursioni in Germania sa essere sempre dei vicoli ciechi. Per questo motivo, a volte viene tradotto come "vicoli ciechi" o "strade di disboscamento" o "fuori dai sentieri battuti" o qualcosa del genere, perché è proprio questo il significato del titolo: i sentieri senza uscita della filosofia e l'oscurità intrinseca della ricerca dell'Essere. Heidegger utilizza questi saggi per esplorare le sue ricerche ontologiche, in particolare la natura dell'essere e la relazione tra gli esseri umani e il mondo circostante.

Auch mit Blick auf Hegels Philosophie ist das Verständnis und die Rolle der Logik zentral und eine Auseinandersetzung über Ziel, Aufbau und Inhalt von Hegels Logik gehört zu den wichtigsten Interpretationsaufgaben. Dem gehen die Autoren S. Houlgate, L. Illetterati, R.B. Pippin und P. Redding in ihren Beiträgen nach. Bei Fichte und Schelling ist die Rolle der Logik weniger offensichtlich. Die Beiträge von C. Asmuth, A. Nuzzo und S. Schwenzfeuer widmen sich daher vor allem der Frage, welchen Platz die Logik in den jeweiligen Konzeptionen inne haben kann und soll.
