Les œuvres d'art, les monuments dont nous célébrons la valeur universelle n'ont pas toujours possédé cette exemplarité. Leur entrée dans le musée leur a donné une nouvelle carrière, esthétique cette fois : ils ont connu une sorte de transfert qui fait passer un objet de sa fonctionnalité au statut d'œuvre d'art, auquel s'attachent alors notre sensibilité et notre mémoire collective. Parmi les grands scénographes du patrimoine, Roland Recht étudie l'action d'Alexandre Lenoir lorsqu'il ordonne le jardin Elysée de son Musée des monuments français sous la Révolution, mais aussi les auteurs du Grand Louvre inauguré en 1993, dont la mise en scène déploie vers la ville un patrimoine-spectacle qui entre en contradiction avec la définition même du musée. Si le dispositif muséal relève avant tout de l'ordre visuel, le catalogue est destiné à réintroduire les objets dans l'ordre discursif de l'histoire de l'art. L'auteur propose ici trois études de cas évoquant des processus au cours desquels de tels objets ont été " inventés " puis caractérisés.

Cette publication accompagne l’exposition Un musée révolutionnaire Le musée des Monuments français d’Alexandre Lenoir au musée du Louvre du 7 Avril 2016 au 4 Juillet 2016. Journée-débat sur Alexandre Lenoir avec participation de l’auteur Roland Recht au musée du Louvre. Les ouvres d’art ne nous intéressent pas seulement en raison de leur valeur historique et artistique, mais aussi parce qu’elles ont pour ainsi dire une seconde histoire, celle de leur accession à un statut patrimonial. C’est cette histoire que l’historien de l’art se propose d’étudier. Dans la mesure où il procède à un transfert qui fait passer l’objet de sa destination cultuelle ou fonctionnelle primitive à une nouvelle vie, à la fois aux plans esthétique et historique, le musée constitue une mise en scène et un dispositif parfaitement réglés. A travers une série d’études ponctuelles, Roland Recht analyse les changements qui affectent notre relation aux objets esthétiques, depuis l’Elysée d’Alexandre Lenoir jusqu’au Grand Louvre ouvert en 1993. Il s’intéresse à ce moment décisif où l’oeuvre d’art et le monument qui l’abrite se trouvent sacralisés. L’auteur examine quelques cas de «réhabilitations», comme celle des primitifs ou de l’art roman, et montre ainsi comment l’histoire de l’art construit ses objets. Il s’interroge enfin sur la redoutable mutation qui gagne aujourd’hui les grandes institutions patrimoniales et sur les effets néfastes qu’elle exerce sur la vie de l’esprit. L'accès au passé, par l'archéologie, l'histoire ou l'exposition, se fonde sur des médiations. Parmi elles, les reconstitutions ou décors d'exposition sont des mises en scène du patrimoine qui font souvent l'objet de critiques. Par leurs aspects spectaculaire et théâtral, elles ne donneraient qu'une illusion de la présence du passé. Elles seraient superficielles, sinon fausses en regard des objets patrimoniaux qu'elles mettent en scène. La fiction n'est-elle pas antinomique du patrimoine et des savoirs garants de son authenticité ? Cet ouvrage montre que les mises en scène sont aussi un moyen de soutenir la force symbolique et l'authenticité du patrimoine. L'analyse d'expositions concrètes de patrimoine archéologique permet de comprendre comment elles construisent une expérience du temps pour le visiteur et un type de médiation original. La construction du discours spatial et l'articulation des éléments fictionnels et des éléments authentiques deviennent alors déterminantes.

François Hartog explores crucial moments of change in society's "regimes of historicity," or its ways of relating to the past, present, and future. Inspired by Hannah Arendt, Reinhart Koselleck, and Paul Ricoeur, Hartog analyzes a broad range of texts, positioning The Odyssey as a work on the threshold of historical consciousness and contrasting it with an investigation of the anthropologist Marshall Sahlins's concept of "heroic history." He tracks changing perspectives on time in Chateaubriand's Historical Essay and Travels in America and sets them alongside other writings from the French Revolution. He revisits the insights of the French Annales School and situates Pierre Nora's Realms of Memory within a history of heritage and today's presentism, from which he addresses Jonas's notion of our responsibility for the future. Our presentist present is by no means uniform or clear-cut, and it is experienced very differently depending on the position we occupy in society. We are caught up in global movement and accelerated flows, or else condemned to the life of casual workers, living from hand to mouth in a stagnant present, with no recognized past, and no real future either (since the temporality of plans and projects is inaccessible). The present is therefore experienced as emancipation or enclosure, and the perspective of the future is no longer reassuring, since it is perceived not as a promise, but as a threat. Hartog's resonant readings show us how the motor of history(-writing) has stalled and help us understand the contradictory qualities of our contemporary presentist relation to time.

Thinking about development and the environment simultaneously is one of the biggest scientific and societal challenges of the 21st century. Understanding the interactions between biophysical systems and human activities in an era of global change requires overcoming disciplinary divides and opening up new epistemological perspectives. L’ampleur des enjeux humains, économiques et sociaux posés par la question des solidarités entre générations a conduit l’International society of Family Law (ISFL) à choisir ce thème pour son XVe congrès mondial. Plus de 200 intervenants, venus de 50 pays, ont abordé ces questions sous l’angle juridique, mais aussi philosophique, économique et anthropologique. The importance of the human, economic and social issues caused by the question of generations’ solidarities led the International Society of Family Law to choose this theme for its XVIth World Congress (Lyon, July 19-23rd 2011). More than 200 speakers from 50 countries studied these questions from the legal angle, but also philosophic, economic and anthropological. This work collects a part of these papers about two great issues: the child, as the center of family solidarities; and the support for elders by family. The volume attempts to triangulate three vibrant discourses of our times: It combines postcolonial and decolonial readings of cultural conflicts with assessments of ecological dimensions of those conflicts, as well as their significance within discourses on natural and cultural world heritage. The examples from four continents range from the medieval Middle East - already shaken by a convergence of ecological and social disaster - to modern imaginary constructions of medieval Vikings, the persistence of Indigenous knowledge in the Arctic, literary poetics of patrimony, and the heritage politics of Mediterranean urban architecture. Authors ask which strategies societies in developing countries use to defend their cultural and ecological uniqueness and integrity while being penetrated by environmental hazards and hegemonizing 'Western' forms of heritage culture; or how western societies construct their own past in ways that are sometimes reminiscent of traditional imaginations of a pre-modern past, petrified eternally in an 'ideal' moment of time. Colonial and historical forms of 'heritagization' of human and non-human environments, the essays show, answer to pressing emotional needs for a sense of stability. But the desire for nostalgia, frequently commodified, tends to collide with the similarly pressing need for political and economic survival in a rapidly changing world and in the face of accelerating extraction practices. Without being able to solve this dilemma, the volume makes an interdisciplinary contribution to taking intellectual stake of the asymmetrical politics and poetics of heritage and collective cultural memory.
