Tiongkok memiliki populasi lansia terbesar di dunia. Pada 2015, jumlah orang yang berusia 60 atau lebih di Tiongkok mencapai 220 juta. Populasi yang menua telah memiliki dampak besar pada pertumbuhan ekonomi, perkembangan sosial dan keluarga, serta kebijakan dan pengaturan kelembagaan. Untuk menghadapi tantangan ini, rencana pembangunan nasional terbaru pemerintah mengusulkan tanggapan ilmiah dan aktif. Hal ini menyebabkan kesadaran yang lebih besar akan masalah tersebut. Penuaan populasi Tiongkok telah memasuki periode perkembangan yang cepat. Peningkatan besar dalam jumlah orang lanjut usia dan penerapan “kebijakan dua anak” akan membawa perubahan besar dalam populasi negara, struktur keluarga, masyarakat, ekonomi, dan budaya. Penting untuk mencerminkan situasi saat ini, menilai tren perkembangan, dan memahami kebutuhan utama lansia. Penting juga untuk melakukan penelitian ilmiah terhadap masalah dan tantangan yang dihadapi oleh masyarakat dan keluarga dalam memberikan dukungan bagi mereka, untuk menghasilkan data dan referensi yang efektif untuk kebijakan dan praktik. Populasi Tiongkok menua lebih cepat daripada banyak negara, tetapi bukan yang tercepat. Harapan hidup telah meningkat secara signifikan, tetapi masih lebih rendah dari negara-negara maju.
