This book celebrates the colorful history of the Verde Valley from its prehistoric settlements to the Arizona State Centennial Celebration in 2012. Located in the heart of Arizona, between the Sonoran Desert and the mountain highlands of the Colorado Plateau, the Verde Valley has been a pleasant refuge for man and beast for thousands of years. In a land known for its lack of water, the Verde River and its tributaries--Clear Creek, Beaver Creek, Oak Creek, and Sycamore Creek--have attracted prehistoric people and American pioneers alike. This book will illustrate the history of the "Verde" from the ruins of the lost civilization to the first Anglo farming efforts along Clear Creek and the military presence at Camp Verde. It will illustrate the settlements at Middle Verde and along Beaver Creek, Rimrock, Oak Creek, Cornville, and Sedona. Finally, it will visit the settlement near the Cottonwoods, the exploitation of the Billion Dollar Copper Camp at Jerome, the smoke-belching furnaces of the smelters, and the elegant architecture of the planned company town of Clarkdale.

The Verde Valley hosts a unique and varied representation of prehistoric cultural sites. It is the host to two National Park Service National Monuments, three U.S. Forest Service Heritage Sites, five protected sites owned by the Archaeological Conservancy, the Yavapai-Apache Nation, and over 2,500 archaeological sites. There are over 450 recorded rock art sites in the Sedona/Verde Valley area. Many visitors express great interest in the rock art at the cultural heritage sites. The docents receive many questions about these images. Who made them? How have they lasted this long? What do they mean? This book is not a scientific monograph on rock art. It does not contain elaborate bibliographic sources, although some are quoted and referenced. This book is intended to be a useful and thought-provoking introduction to the vast, scattered and sometimes unpublished literature on rock art, with specific focus on images and styles found in the Sedona/Verde Valley area. It is hoped that it will promote reflection on and appreciation of the people who created the rock art. The mission of the Verde Valley Archaeology Center is to preserve archaeological sites and collections and to promote their educational, scientific and cultural use. We advocate for the preservation of the Verde Valley's irreplaceable cultural resources that include significant structures, sites and artifacts. Through education and information, we provide leadership to the regional community on the critical issues of understanding and preserving our rich cultural heritage. The Center is dedicated to enhancing the knowledge of the prehistory and ethnology of inhabitants of the Verde Valley region. We promote a greater understanding of the diversity of cultures, past and present, for our guests and the citizens of the Verde Valley.

The region described in the following pages comprises the valley of the Rio Verde, in Arizona, from Verde, in eastern central Yavapai county, to the confluence with Salt river, in Maricopa county. From the IntroductionThe written history of the region treated extends back only a few years. Since the aboriginal inhabitants abandoned it, or were driven from it, the hostile Apache and Walapai roamed over it without hindrance or opposition, and so late as twenty-five years ago, when the modern settlement of the region commenced, ordinary pursuits were almost impossible. Some of the pioneer settlers are still in possession, and are occupying the ground they took up at the time when the rifle was more necessary for successful agriculture than the plow.
