In a once-grand, now down-at-its-heels bungalow in a South Delhi colony lives Naina with her mother, sister, and the stigma that madness ‘runs in the family’. When a woman’s face peeps in from the mists of her childhood memories, Naina sets out in search of the truth behind her father’s disappearance. Then comes a call that begins to unspool the past. People on our Roof is a portrait of one woman’s undying commitment to her kin; her struggle with relationships and a heart-wrenching story of indestructible love between two people. A coming of age story, it also explores the world of people whose minds are wired differently.

Riveting, inspiring, and informative, Johanna’s often graphic memoir, Enemy under Our Roof, is based on the author’s experiences in war-torn Hengelo, the Netherlands in World War II. From nights of terror spent in the cellar during air raids to the dreaded razzias, when friends and neighbours are taken away to the camps, readers will be spellbound as they are transported back to 1940’s Europe. Told through the eyes of young Cobie, the narrative adopts an innocence that stands in stark contrast to the realities of war. When hordes of Nazi bombers invade the Netherlands, Cobie’s peaceful, orderly world is turned upside down. Gradually she must learn to cope with fear, loss, cruelty, and despair. As she matures, she tries to make sense of the horrors of war and her Christian faith – a faith she maintains amid disillusionment and questioning. Her most trying experience occurs when a Nazi officer billets himself in her home by force, and she is confronted with issues of hatred and forgiveness. She must battle both the enemy without and within, uncovering valuable truths in the process. Throughout the ordeal she is sustained by her older brother’s sense of humour, her faithful friends, and the love and courage of her parents, who keep hope alive until the long-awaited day of liberation.

A congresswoman and her son reveal how he survived a ten-year battle with opioid abuse--and what their family's journey to recovery can teach us about finding hope amid the unspeakable. "Beautiful and inspiring."--Maria Shriver's Sunday Paper (Book of the Week) When Madeleine Dean discovered that her son Harry was stealing from the family to feed a painkiller addiction, she was days away from taking the biggest risk of her life: running for statewide office in Pennsylvania. For years, she had sensed something was wrong. Harry was losing weight and losing friends. He had lost the brightness in his eyes and voice, changing from a young boy with boundless enthusiasm to a shadow of himself, chasing something she could not see. Now her worst fears had come to light. Under Our Roof is the story of a national crisis suffered in the intimacy of so many homes, told with incredible candor through the dual perspectives of a mother rising in politics and a son living a double life, afraid of what might happen if his secret is exposed. In this honest, bracing, yet ultimately uplifting memoir, they discuss the patterns of a family dealing with an unspoken disease, the fear that keeps addicts hiding in shame, and the moments of honesty, faith, and personal insight that led to Harry's recovery. In a country searching for answers to the devastating effects of opioids and drug abuse, Under Our Roof is a ray of hope in the darkness. It is not only a love story between mother and son but also an honest account of a pressing national crisis by a family poised to make a difference.

At lunchtime on a bitterly cold January day in 1969, the strains of guitar chords could be heard in the streets surrounding London’s Savile Row. Crowds gathered – At ground level and above. People climbed onto roofs and postboxes, skipped lunch to gather and listen: For the first time in more than two years, The Beatles were playing live. Ringing from the rooftops, disturbing the well-to-do ears of the tailors below, they upset the establishment and bewildered the police. It was filmed by director Michael Lindsay-Hogg, who hoped the footage would act as the finale to a celebratory TV special. When it finally surfaced, it was in the bleak, tumultuous documentary Let It Be. And The Beatles would never play live again. Tony Barrell examines the concert within the context of its time. He speaks to those who were there: the fans, film-makers, roadies, Apple Corps staff and police. He explores the politics of 1968, when peace gave way to protest, and how music promotion began to collide with cinéma vérité and reality TV. The Beatles on the Roof makes essential reading for anyone interested in the band’s reinventions and relationships, revealing why the rooftop concert happened at all, why it happened the way that it did, and why it would never happen again.

Did you ever wonder what was foreign about the Foreign Service? Neither did Iuntil I began to live it. This is my story as a Foreign Service wife and mother of five. My husband's job with USAID was to improve conditions in underdeveloped countries where there was war or disaster during the Vietnam War Era. My job was to follow him to the Philippines, Vietnam, Nigeria, Washington DC, and Nicaragua. We touched another thirteen countries. There is humor in the cultural challenges and danger where guerillas terrorized the highways. It is also a peek into the world of diplomacy and embassy life. My Spanish caused the cook to serve sandwiches of lettuce, tomatoes, and roast beef nestled in gooey peanut butter and jelly at my spur-of-the-moment lunch for the government Ministers. Our school bus was an Embassy station wagon with a driver, a guard, and a loaded M2 carbine rifle. The kitchen stove on our vacation was a circle of rocks on the beach. Managua was over six-hundred square blocks of rubble, ashes, and barbed wire when we arrived.

From the New York Times and Sunday Times bestselling author of The Love Hypothesis comes a new steamy, STEMinist novella... A scientist should never cohabitate with her annoyingly hot nemesis - it leads to combustion. Mara, Sadie, and Hannah are friends first, scientists always. Though their fields of study might take them to different corners of the world, they can all agree on this universal truth: when it comes to love and science, opposites attract and rivals make you burn... As an environmental engineer, Mara knows all about the delicate nature of ecosystems. They require balance. And leaving the thermostat alone. And not stealing someone else's food. And other rules Liam, her detestable big-oil lawyer of a roommate, knows nothing about. Okay, sure, technically she's the interloper. Liam was already entrenched in his aunt's house like some glowering grumpy giant when Mara moved in, with his big muscles and kissable mouth just sitting there on the couch tempting respectable scientists to the dark side...but Helena was her mentor and Mara's not about to move out and give up her inheritance without a fight. The problem is, living with someone means getting to know them. And the more Mara finds out about Liam, the harder it is to loathe him...and the easier it is to love him. To read Sadie and Hannah's stories look for the novellas Stuck with You and Below Zero. Ali Hazelwood's latest novel, Love on the Brain is out now.
