Did you know that a black man founded Chicago, Illinois? Did you know that the iconic television program Sesame Street grew out of the Civil Rights movement? This collection of unsung trailblazers unearths these and other little-known facts from the past. Packed with insightful encyclopedic entries, 45 People, Places, and Events in Black History You Should Know is the perfect primer for the Black History dabbler or enthusiast. In this book, you will discover: 15 individual men 15 individual women, and 15 important people, places, or events A large portion of these subjects received scant recognition from media outlets. But their names and stories are worth remembering because they figure prominently in the large historic landscape that forms the world narrative. Among the many subjects covered in this book are Bridget "Biddy" Mason, a black female and former slave. Toward the end of the nineteenth century, she was the wealthiest resident of Los Angeles, California. You'll learn about Covert, Michigan, the U.S. township that defied the racist norms of the post-Civil War era by refusing to segregate. And you'll read about C.R. Patterson and Sons, the first and only major car manufacturer owned and operated by black Americans. Prepare to be informed!

Events can be synonymous with a particular place, helping shape and promote a location. Given the rise of the global events industry, this book uncovers how events impact upon places and societies, looking at a range of different events and geographical scales. Geographers are concerned with how notions of space and place impact people, communities and identity, and events have played a central role in how places are perceived, consumed and even contested. This book will discuss international event cases to frame knowledge around the increased demands, pressures and complexities that globalisation, transnationalism, regeneration and competitiveness has put on events, places and societies. Integrating discussions of theory and practice, this book will explore the range of conceptual perspectives linked to how geographers and sociologists understand events and the role events play in contemporary times. This involves recognizing histories and planning strategies, the purpose of bidding for an event or the local meanings that have emerged and changed in the place. This helps us analyse how events have the potential to redefine place identities. This international edited collection will appeal to academics across disciplines such as geography, planning and sociology, as well as students on events management and events studies courses.

Contemporary Readings In The Philosophy Of Literature written by David Davies and has been published by Broadview Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-03-06 with Philosophy categories.

What, if anything, distinguishes works of fiction such as Hamlet and Madame Bovary from biographies, news reports, or office bulletins? Is there a “right” way to interpret fiction? Should we link interpretation to the author’s intention? Ought our moral unease with works that betray sadistic, sexist, or racist elements lower our judgments of their aesthetic worth? And what, when it comes down to it, is literature? The readings in this collection bring together some of the most important recent work in the philosophy of literature by philosophers such as Martha Nussbaum, John Searle, and David Lewis. The readings explore philosophical issues such as the nature of fiction, the status of the author, the act of interpretation, the role of the emotions in the act of reading, the aesthetic and moral value of literary works, and other topics central to the philosophy of literature.

This is the first comprehensive volume to explore and engage with current trends in Geographies of Media research. It reviews how conceptualizations of mediated geographies have evolved. Followed by an examination of diverse media contexts and locales, the book illustrates key issues through the integration of theoretical and empirical case studies, and reflects on the future challenges and opportunities faced by scholars in this field. The contributions by an international team of experts in the field, address theoretical perspectives on mediated geographies, methodological challenges and opportunities posed by geographies of media, the role and significance of different media forms and organizations in relation to socio-spatial relations, the dynamism of media in local-global relations, and in-depth case studies of mediated locales. Given the theoretical and methodological diversity of this book, it will provide an important reference for geographers and other interdisciplinary scholars working in cultural and media studies, researchers in environmental studies, sociology, visual anthropology, new technologies, and political science, who seek to understand and explore the interconnections of media, space and place through the examples of specific practices and settings.
