Over the last 30 years, it has become increasingly recognised that voice-hearing is a meaningful experience, and one which people can come to understand and to cope with. We used to think that when someone said they heard voices they would be removed from society and that they would never be able to live a fulfilling life. Now, though, thanks to the work of groups like the Hearing Voices Movement and the increasing use of the Recovery Model in mental health services, we have come to understand that this is not the case. People who hear voices have the same rights to achieve, to live well, and to be in control of their lives. This self-study guide represents the authors' explorations of current best-practice guidance, adapting information from mainstream national guidance of what is known to be helpful in order to meet the needs of people with intellectual disabilities who hear voices, so that they can also have hope for their futures, and can be supported to achieve the lives they want for themselves.This is not a one-size-fits-all guide, but it is a framework that can be used by carers to work alongside the person they support to start understanding their experiences and support needs in more detail, and to know more about what kinds of questions to ask. Hearing (Our) Voices describes two innovative participatory action research projects - one on communication with medical professionals, the other on housing - carried out by a group of people diagnosed with schizophrenia under the guidance of Professor Barbara Schneider. Participants designed the research, conducted interviews and focus groups, participated in data analysis, and disseminated research results through a number of innovative strategies including theatre performances, a documentary film, a graphic novel, and a travelling exhibit.
