The first story in this book is Jackie Waldman's own -- the self-described charmed life -- until July of 1991, when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. It took years, but eventually she came to understand that a person with MS is only part of who she is. Since her diagnosis she's done a number of things, including publish the Courage to Give series. In this most recent addition to the series, Waldman has collected stories of 24 men and women living with MS, who have extraordinary lives, who've gone way beyond slogging through every day, who've found the courage to do new things or old things in new ways, to make the lives of those around them -- sometimes tens of thousands of those around them -- so much better. In these pages, you'll meet Alicia Conill, an M.D. who continued her medical practice for as long as she could, and then founded a revolutionary course called The Disability Experience, so that health care workers know what it's like to live with disability. You'll also meet Anthony Zaremba, who almost lost his job when his employees thought his shaking hands meant he was drunk or on drugs. His work is with community gardens and making one in Brooklyn wheelchair accessible. There's Loia Feuchter, who started a knitting circle that does philanthropic knitting. There's Dwight Riskey, a senior VP of Frito Lay, who organized a big team to raise money for MS. There's David L. Lander, better known as Squiggy from "Laverne and Shirley," who hid his disease for years. But now he's an Ambassador for the National MS Society.

Fighting Ms written by Erin Morrow Still and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-11 with Health & Fitness categories.

In the spring 1999, at eighteen years old, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. The idea of a newly diagnosed book that focused on wellness began once I finally got my MS under control. It took four long years of understanding what my body needed to be healthy, while experiencing life as a college student at Appalachian State University. I found myself searching for a wellness summary of multiple sclerosis. Why couldn't I find everything I needed in one place? This idea seemed like something most newly diagnosed individuals would have already asked for, but it was nowhere to be found. I didn't want too much information at once, only what I needed to start out healthy and stay positive. In addition to needing a wellness summary, I sought to find other young people who were just beginning life with multiple sclerosis. I needed to know people who were positive and could laugh this off with me. In 2003, I established my role as an MS patients' advocate by founding with the help of the MS Society a young men's and women's group in middle Tennessee. Then in 2005, I was awarded the Betaseron Champion of Courage grant to write the book we have all been waiting for--a wellness guide to MS for the newly diagnosed. Lance Armstrong says it best when he explains why children cope with cancer so much better than adults. He says, It's a fact that children with cancer have higher cure rates than adults with cancer, and I wonder if the reason is their natural, unthinking bravery. Sometimes little kids seem better equipped to deal with cancer than adults. They're very determined little characters, and you don't have to give them big pep talks. Adults know too much about failure; they're more cynical and resigned and fearful. Kids say, I want to play. Hurry up and make me better.' That's all they want. This quote helps me each day and will continue to be my approach to life. I will never forget the news of my diagnosis and thinking about how I couldn't wait to get back to school to feel normal again. The MS could come along if it wanted to, but I was going to get back to life no matter what it took. When I was younger, I used to love reading Young and Modern, or YM to most teenagers. There are stories in this magazine under a section called Say Anything, and they always made me laugh out loud. Of course these were juvenile stories of walking out of the bathroom with your skirt tucked in your tights or something of that nature. I realized that there where others out there who had it worse than I did, and sadly, that always seemed to make me feel better. This is why telling our MS stories will help to enable other newly diagnosed individuals not only to begin this journey in a positive state, but also to find the strength they need from someone who might have it worse. I love my health-conscious lifestyle and feeling good about my body, so I needed health tips and recipes, too. Plus, I found friends and resources along the way that helped to make this book complete. This book is designed to help us join together and find the positive in all we have to face. I would like each individual who has been diagnosed with MS to be able to relate to some of the experiences he or she reads in this book and know that we still enjoy wonderful lives, even with this heinous disease. Reaching out to others and finding a positive network will help make us all stronger. My dream for this manuscript is to be passed along to someone newly diagnosed, and let them know that we can beat this disease together! I will leave you with a final quote by Lance Armstrong. If children have the ability to ignore odds and percentages, then maybe we can all learn from them. When you think about it, what other choice is there but to hope? We have two options, medically and emotionally: give up, or fight like hell.

Multiple Sclerosis is a devastating, incurable disease that afflicts about one in a thousand North Americans. Striking in the prime of life, it is the most common debilitating neurological disorder of people between the ages of 20 and 40. Eighty percent of patients suffer from cognitive impairments, seventy percent from sexual dysfunction, and fifty percent from depression. Few people are prepared for the emotional impact of this unpredictable, disabling chronic condition. Faced with a life-long progressive illness, patients typically experience fear, anger, sadness, grief, guilt, low self-esteem and sexual dysfunction. Half of all MS patients suffer from clinical depression. Other invisible symptoms, such as cognitive impairments and severe fatigue, often leave patients feeling misunderstood and alone. The emotional affects of MS can be more crippling than the physical challenges, yet little has been written on this topic. MS AND YOUR FEELINGS is the first book to specifically address the emotional pain caused by MS. Psychotherapist and MS patient, Allison Shadday, offers readers effective strategies for coping with the psychological trauma of this disease. Shadday shares real-life MS success stories and offers insightful professional advice derived from years of counseling hundreds of chronically ill patients. Her book offers readers hope, inspiration and validation, and teaches them: ·How to come to terms with an MS diagnosis ·How to recognize and overcome negative emotional responses to MS ·Techniques to identify and manage stress triggers that can impact MS symptoms ·Ways to minimize MS-related fatigue ·Strategies for coping with fear, guilt, anger, loss, depression and isolation ·Steps to enhance intimacy and build support networks ·How to deal with cognitive challenges ·Tips for increasing self-esteem ·How to develop a greater sense of emotional security and stability ·Latest information about new treatment options and promising research In addition, noted neurologist and MS expert Dr. Stanley Cohan, Director of the Pacific Northwest Multiple Sclerosis Center writes about the importance of treating the emotional symptoms of MS and discusses the promising future of MS drug research. Full of immediate, useful solutions, MS AND YOUR FEELINGS is an invaluable guide for patients, their loved ones and MS health care professionals.

I am a Standupster, A Second Generation Survivors Account, by the Daughter of David Zauder, is the first-ever biography of Internationally Acclaimed Holocaust and Anti-bullying Educator and Speaker, Karen Zauder Brass. Her book is a very rare exploration into the effects of being raised by a parent who suffered the inhumanity of genocide and its unimaginable costs. Brass comes out of the shadows and openly expresses what so few Second Generation Survivors are willing to discuss. The deep injury to their survivor parents psyches cannot simply be put aside and has deep and lasting effects on their children. From her earliest years, Brass was fully aware of who her surviving parent needed her to be. This is a book of deep introspection that also shares the Authors path to self-acceptance, happiness, and her powerful desire to make changes in our world by educating audiences, one human being at a time, to not stand by and allow for the suffering of others; To be a Standupster. Brass provides the descriptive background of her Father, David Zauders survival of the Krakow Ghetto and four concentration camps including Auschwitz. His survival of a true hell on Earth, and his success in emigrating from Poland, after his liberation by General Pattons 3rd Army Tank Division, then travel from Germany to America and becoming one of this countrys leading cornet and trumpet players will inspire you and touch your heart. For educators, Brass weaves her Fathers story into a groundbreaking international anti-bullying campaign which has been experienced by thousands of Middle and High School aged students, adults, and hundreds of high-ranking military officials. Acclaimed by educators, principals and parents alike, Brass Standupster presentations and campaign has been effective in reducing bullying in schools because it provides a rallying cry for everyone to never stand by in the face of hatred, bigotry, and injustice; the program calls on the audience to use personal responsibility and moral leadership to rise together as being a Standupster to stop the bullying.

“I would love for my younger fans to read What Will It Take to Make a Woman President? by Marianne Schnall. It’s a collection of interviews and essays by great women, including Maya Angelou, Gloria Steinem, and Melissa Etheridge. They will inspire you to become a better leader.” —Beyoncé Prompted by a question from her eight-year-old daughter during the 2008 election of Barack Obama—“Why haven’t we ever had a woman president?”—Marianne Schnall set out on a journey to find the answer. A widely published writer, author, and interviewer, and the Executive Director of Feminist.com, Schnall began looking at the issues from various angles and perspectives, gathering viewpoints from influential people from all sectors. What Will It Take to Make A Woman President? features interviews with politicians, public officials, thought leaders, writers, artists, and activists in an attempt to discover the obstacles that have held women back and what needs to change in order to elect a woman into the White House. With insights and personal anecdotes from Sheryl Sandberg, Maya Angelou, Gloria Steinem, Nancy Pelosi, Nicholas Kristof, Melissa Etheridge, and many more, this book addresses timely, provocative issues involving women, politics, and power. With a broader goal of encouraging women and girls to be leaders in their lives, their communities, and the larger world, Schnall and her interviewees explore the changing paradigms occurring in politics and in our culture with the hope of moving toward meaningful and effective solutions—and a world where a woman can be president.
