In this beautifully illustrated book Maria Antonella Pelizzari traces the history of photography in Italy from its beginnings to the present as she guides us through the history of Italy and its ancient sites and Renaissance landmarks. Pelizzari specifically considers the role of photography in the formation of Italian national identity during times of political struggle, such as the lead up to Unification in 1860, and later in the nationalist wars of Mussolini’s regime. While many Italians and foreigners— such as Fratelli Alinari or Carlo Ponti, John Ruskin or Kit Talbot—focused their lenses on architectural masterpieces, others documented the changing times and political heroes, creating icons of figures such as Garibaldi and the brigands. Le demolizioni e gli sventramenti nelle città del XIX° secolo cancellano i palinsesti urbani antichi, sovrapponendo ad essi nuove strutture, moderne e razionali. La fotografia, impiegata in massicce campagne di documentazione, si rivela un mezzo di straordinaria efficacia per l’analisi ed il controllo del paesaggio. La rappresentazione dello spazio urbano in trasformazione non mancherà di influenzare a sua volta l’immagine della città più in generale, vista come un organismo pulsante di vita, anziché come uno statico insieme di monumenti. A Roma, durante i lavori per il Piano Regolatore del 1883, un gruppo di fotografi percorre la città per cinque anni con l’incarico di documentarne i cambiamenti. Questi fotografi, incuriositi di lavorare lontano dai percorsi abituali per la loro professione, cercano nuovi strumenti per documentare una città fino a quel momento vista come un insieme di monumenti archeologici e scenette pittoresche. Il fondo Piano Regolatore 1883, custodito presso l’Archivio Fotografico Comunale di Roma, è una raccolta di spettacolari immagini di trasformazione; fortunate ricerche di archivio hanno permesso di tracciare la storia di queste fotografie, dalla committenza alla destinazione finale, approfondendo il lato emozionale del lavoro dei fotografi. La loro esperienza costituisce il banco di prova per nuove soluzioni visive, che saranno chiarite nella fotografia dei decenni successivi, documentando così il passaggio dalla veduta fotografica ottocentesca ai modi della fotografia contemporanea.

Attraverso una serie di immagini fotografiche che vanno dal 1870 circa all'epoca contemporanea, questo volume intende ripercorrere la storia recente di palazzo Braschi, storica dimora nobile ed oggi sede del Museo di Roma. Fatto costruire dal pontefice Pio VI come residenza per il nipote Luigi Braschi Onesti alla fine del Settecento, il palazzo rappresenta l'ultima espressione del nepotismo pontificio alle soglie della Rivoluzione Francese. Nel 1871 il palazzo fu venduto dagli eredi Braschi allo Stato Italiano che vi stabilí la sede del Ministero degli Interni. Il volume si configura come un album fotografico al quale sono aggiunte brevi note esplicative e racconta per immagini le varie funzioni pubbliche che palazzo Braschi venne chiamato a svolgere dall'unità d'Italia all'epoca fascista, prima di accogliere, nel 1952, il Museo di Roma. Troviamo fotografie di Francesco Crispi e dei suoi collaboratori, ed altre che illustrano varie manifestazioni degli anni '20 e '30 del Novecento. Sono inoltre documentate le fasi del restauro che interessò l'edificio nel periodo post-bellico. Concudono il percorso le immagini che riguardano circa quarant'anni di vita del museo con gli allestimenti delle sale e il ricordo di avvenimenti, inaugurazioni di mostre e convegni che a palazzo Braschi hanno avuto luogo.
