The Discourse Of Perceived Discrimination written by Sol Rojas-Lizana and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09-26 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This book offers a way forward toward a better understanding of perceived discrimination from a critical discourse studies perspective. The volume begins with a discussion of quantitative studies on perceived discrimination across a range of disciplines and moves toward outlining the ways in which a discourse-based framework, drawing on tools from cognitive linguistics and discursive psychology, offers valuable tools with which to document and analyze perceived discrimination through myriad lenses. Rojas-Lizana provides a systematic account, grounded in a critical approach, of perceived discrimination drawing on data from discourse from two minority groups, self-identified members of an LGBTIQ community and Spanish-speaking immigrants in Australia, and explores such topics as the relationship between language and discrimination, the conditions for determining what constitutes discriminatory acts, and both the copying and resistance strategies victims employ in their experiences. A concluding chapter offers a broader comparison of the conclusions drawn from both communities and discusses their implications for further research on perceived discrimination. This volume will be of particular interest to students and scholars in critical discourse studies, social policy, gender and sexuality studies, and migration studies.

This book aims to chart the extent to which residents of the Netherlands perceive that they are subject to discrimination, from the perspectives of group identities, discrimination grounds, and societal domains. In addition, it highlights the consequences that people attach to their experiences. The study shows that different types of perceived discrimination are associated with different groups and are related to the way in which groups are perceived in Dutch society.

"In this dissertation we have investigated perceptions of discrimination. We have shown discrimination exists in the eyes of applicants and employees and especially when from an ethnic minority group. There are psychological variables that influence these perceptions differently for minority and majority groups but the groups are not per se based on ethnicity as they also depend on whether one feels connected with ones' subgroup and whether one values this identity. People tend to differ in how sensitive they are to rejection and in being high or low on core self evaluations or in the way they attribute events. This affects their level of perceived discrimination and affects perceptions of discrimination differently for ethnic groups, for groups that are rejected or accepted for a job, and affects reactions when a diversity policy is included or excluded in recruitment. At work, the role of the leader also turned out to be of importance as, for both minority and majority groups, deeper level similarity was related to perceptions of discrimination. Finally, the findings in this dissertation offer a starting point for future research as well as for thinking about how further feelings of perceived discrimination can be reduced in practice."--Samenvatting auteur.

Abstract: Only within the past 30 years have psychologists begun to systematically examine the effects of perceived discrimination (PD) on stigmatized individuals. Since then, the research has offered a variety of findings that may initially seem to contradict one another. The majority of research conducted within a feedback-oriented paradigm has found that perceiving discrimination can help individuals externalize reasons for failure, therefore buffering self-esteem and well-being. Other lines of research have suggested that attributions to prejudice across time and contexts ultimately have deleterious effects on well-being, in spite of whatever short-term gains may result from externalizing failure. A recent structural equation model examining the effects of perceived discrimination has examined two paradoxical effects; (a) social rejection and (b) identification with one's in-group. While social rejection was found to be inversely related to well-being, ethnic identification was found to buffer the relationship between PD and well-being. By specifying both positive and negative consequences to PD, the Rejection-Identification Model (RIM) provided a deeper understanding of the complexity involved with stigmatization and the struggle faced by those targeted by discrimination. While the RIM has provided new insights and elucidated several key pathways in the formation of well-being, the model can be improved by incorporating current theory. First, the current study proposes that perceived discrimination only affects collective well-being directly, since discrimination, when perceived as motivated by racial prejudice, is an attack on a person's group-level identity. Any consequences to one's personal identity are thought to be indirect and likely mediated by collective well-being. Second, research stemming from Social Identity Theory suggests that collective well-being and personal well-being are interrelated; therefore, in so far as perceived discrimination affects well-being, collective well-being should have a direct effect on personal well-being. Additional limitations of the perceived discrimination literature include a paucity of research about how Asian Americans are affected by discrimination, inadequate sample sizes rendering poor power for modeling analyses, and an over-reliance on psychology undergraduate students for participants. Based on these findings, a refinement of the Rejection-Identification Model was proposed and fitted to data collected from 421 African American and Asian American participants. The participants were drawn from both undergraduate psychology classes and the community at-large. Structural equation modeling analyses indicated that the hypothesized alterations to the RIM (RIM-Altered) produced the best fitting model. Consistent with the hypotheses of the study, perceived discrimination was not found to affect personal well-being directly and collective well-being was found to have a direct effect on personal well-being. Racial/ethnic group comparisons and sample comparisons suggested that the RIM-Altered fit both Asian American and African American sub-samples equally well, but that the RIM-Altered fit the college student sample significantly better than the community sample. Limitations, implications, and directions for future research are discussed.

Empirical evidence indicates that perceptions of personal discriminated has negative psychological consequences (Pascoe & Smart Richman, 2009). Although existing studies vary in a number of important ways, one common thread is the assumption that the psychological costs of perceived personal discrimination stem from absolute perceptions. Relative deprivation theory (e.g., Pettigrew, 1967), however, suggests that the psychological costs of perceived personal discrimination may be dependent upon subjective social comparisons. In particular, perceiving personal discrimination may be most psychologically costly to individuals who believe that they experience a higher level of discrimination than other members of their group (i.e., perceived relative discrimination). The three cross-sectional studies reported in this dissertation support this argument. Using an indirect approach to assessing perceived relative discrimination, in Study 1 I showed that perceived personal discrimination was negatively associated with self-esteem and was positively associated with anxiety and depressive symptoms among Latino adults, but that these associations were strongest for participants who believed that other Latinos experienced low levels of discrimination. In Study 2, using a direct measure of perceived relative discrimination, I showed that perceptions of relative discrimination were negatively associated with self-esteem and were positively associated with anxiety and depressive symptoms among Latino adults. These associations remained significant after accounting for perceptions of personal discrimination. In Study 3 I replicated these results with a sample of adult women. In addition, the results of Studies 2 and 3 suggest that perceived relative discrimination may be psychologically costly because it reduces individuals' feelings of competence. The results of my studies indicate that scholars should give greater attention to perceptions of relative discrimination in their efforts to understand the psychological costs associated with perceptions that one has been personally discriminated against. My results also draw attention to feelings of competence as a potential psychological process through which perceptions of relative discrimination are associated with negative psychological outcomes.
