"We spend much of our waking lives interacting with other people, reading their facial expressions to figure out what they might be feeling, thinking, or intending to do next (Ekman 1994; Fridlund 1994). At the same time, we also express our own feelings, thoughts, and intentions through facial expressions. Knowing how to read and express emotional facial expressions is not always easy, and it may become particularly challenging when interacting with people from other cultures (Elfenbein & Ambady, 2002; Elfenbein & Ambady, 2003; Elfenbein, Beaupré, Lévesque, & Hess, 2007). The goal of the present dissertation was to shed more light on the two processes of emotion communication-expression and perception/inference-with a primary focus on the roles of dynamic expressions and cultural frame in emotion communication. The empirical work presented here highlights that (a) people from different cultures differ in the specificity of emotion communication (i.e., Westerners are more specific than Easterners in both perception and production of facial expressions of emotion), (b) people from different cultures differ in the interpretation of positive emotions (i.e., the interpretation of a smile depends on its intensity and cultural context), and (c) people infer others' personality traits based on their perception of dynamic facial expressions (i.e., people weigh the end emotion more heavily than the start emotion in dynamic facial expressions)."--Samenvatting auteur.

Face perception is a highly evolved visual skills in humans. This complex ability develops across the life-span, steeply rising in infancy, refining across childhood and adolescence, reaching highest levels in adulthood and declining in old age. As such, the development of face perception comprises multiple skills, including sensory (e.g., mechanisms of holistic, configural and featural perception), cognitive (e.g., memory, processing speed, attentional control), and also emotional and social (e.g., reading and interpreting facial expression) domains. Whereas our understanding of specific functional domains involved in face perception is growing, there is further pressing demand for a multidisciplinary approach toward a more integrated view, describing how face perception ability relates to and develops with other domains of sensory and cognitive functioning. One of the defining attributes of the human species is sophisticated communication, for which facial expressions are crucial. Traditional research has so far mainly investigated a minority of 6 basic emotional expressions displayed as pictures. Despite the important insights of this approach, its ecological validity is limited: facial movements express more than emotions, and facial expressions are more than just pictures. The objective of the present thesis is therefore to improve the understanding of facial expression recognition by investigating the internal representations of a large range of facial expressions, displayed both as static pictures and as dynamic videos. To this end, it was necessary to develop and validate a new facial expression database which includes 20.000 stimuli of 55 expressions (study 1). Perceptual representations of the six basic emotional expressions were found previously to rely on evaluation of valence and arousal; study 2 showed that this evaluation generalises to many more expressions, particularly when displayed as videos. While it is widely accepted that knowledge influences perception, how these are linked is largely unknown; study 3 investigated this question by asking how knowledge about facial expressions, instantiated as conceptual representations, relates to perceptual representations of these expressions. A strong link was found which changed with the kind of expressions and the type of display. In probably the most extensive behavioural studies (with regards to the number of facial expressions used) to date, this thesis suggests that there are commonalities but also differences in processing of emotional and of other types of facial expressions. Thus, to understand facial expression processing, one needs to consider more than the 6 basic emotional expressions. These findings outline first steps towards a new domain in facial expression research, which has implications for a number of research and application fields where facial expressions play a role, ranging from social, developmental, and clinical psychology to computer vision and affective computing research.

Feelings argues for the counter-intuitive idea that feelings do not cause behavior, but rather follow from behavior, and are, in fact, the way that we know about our own bodily states and behaviors. This point of view, often associated with William James, is called self-perception theory. Self-perception theory can be empirically tested by manipulating bodily states and behaviors in order to see if the corresponding feelings are produced. In this volume, James D. Laird presents hundreds of studies, all demonstrating that feelings do indeed follow from behavior. Behaviors that have been manipulated include facial expressions of emotion, autonomic arousal, actions, gaze, and postures. The feelings that have been induced include happiness, anger, fear, romantic love, liking, disliking, hunger, and feelings of familiarity. These feelings do not feel like knowledge because they are knowledge-by-acquaintance, such as the knowledge we have of how an apple tastes, rather than verbal, knowledge-by-description, such as the knowledge that apples are red, round, and edible. Many professional theories of human behavior, as well as common sense, explain actions by an appeal to feelings as causes. Laird argues to the contrary that if feelings are information about behaviors that are already ongoing, feelings cannot be causes and that the whole mechanistic model of human behavior as "caused" in this sense seems mistaken. He proposes an alternative, cybernetic model, involving hierarchically stacked control systems. In this model, feelings provide feedback to the control systems, and in a further elaboration, this model suggests that the stack of control systems matches a similar stack of levels of organization of the world. An original contribution to the study of the relationship between feelings and behavior, the volume will be of interest to social, emotional, and cognitive psychologists.

This eBook aims to deepen our understanding of emotional communication by introducing “dynamic” perspectives. Facial and bodily expressions of emotion functions as indispensable communicative signals for human beings. People decode the emotional information conveyed by facial/bodily expressions and use this to coordinate cooperative or competitive social relationships. Experimental psychological research has long investigated these important means of emotional communication. However, this was typically done by using static stimuli of facial/bodily expressions to assess the detection and interpretation of emotions. This paradigm was also adopted in neuropsychological, neurophysiological, and neuroimaging studies. Although researchers accumulated valuable information regarding the psychological and neural mechanisms underlying these processes, the static nature of the stimuli may have resulted in important phenomena remaining unexamined. Recently, scientists have begun to explore dynamic emotional communication, in particular by using dynamic facial/bodily expressions of emotion, instead of static photographs, as stimuli. This is having important consequences for emotion research. As dynamic emotional expressions have increased ecological validity and as there are differences in the visual processing of dynamic and static information, a host of novel aspects of the psychological and neural processing of emotional expressions have been elucidated. For example, it has been shown that motor resonance and the recruitment of motor areas are fundamental to dynamic emotional communication. Researchers have also started to investigate the encoding of dynamic emotional interactions and have clarified the messages embedded in the temporal aspects and the patterns of reciprocal inter-individual coordination. Moreover, investigations of dynamic emotional communication have identified heretofore unrecognized impairments in the social functioning of individuals with psychiatric disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia.
