As was already evident from the previous two meetings, the theory of stochastic processes, the study of geometrical structures, and the investigation of certain physical problems are inter-related. In fact the trend in recent years has been towards stronger interactions between these areas. As a result, a large component of the contributions is concerned with the theory of stochastic processes, quantum theory, and their relations.

This volume has been created in honor of the seventieth birthday of Ted Harris, which was celebrated on January 11th, 1989. The papers rep resent the wide range of subfields of probability theory in which Ted has made profound and fundamental contributions. This breadth in Ted's research complicates the task of putting together in his honor a book with a unified theme. One common thread noted was the spatial, or geometric, aspect of the phenomena Ted investigated. This volume has been organized around that theme, with papers covering four major subject areas of Ted's research: branching processes, percola tion, interacting particle systems, and stochastic flows. These four topics do not· exhaust his research interests; his major work on Markov chains is commemorated in the standard technology "Harris chain" and "Harris recurrent" . The editors would like to take this opportunity to thank the speakers at the symposium and the contributors to this volume. Their enthusi astic support is a tribute to Ted Harris. We would like to express our appreciation to Annette Mosley for her efforts in typing the manuscripts and to Arthur Ogawa for typesetting the volume. Finally, we gratefully acknowledge the National Science Foundation and the University of South ern California for their financial support.

This publication contains papers from the Communicating Process Architectures 2006 conference, held at Napier University in Edinburgh. It is perhaps appropriate that a meeting concerning simple ways of designing, implementing and reasoning about concurrent systems should be held in an institution named after the inventor of a simple, and highly concurrent, adding machine. The house in which John Napier lived forms part of the campus where the meeting was held. The papers are very varied and wide ranging and subjects include various aspects of communicating process theory and their application to designing and building systems. One of the hottest current topics – safe and effective programming models for multicore processors (e.g. IBM’s Cell) – has a natural home in this community and is addressed. Other papers include a case study on large scale formal development and verification, CSP mechanisms for Microsoft’s .NET framework, parallel systems on embedded and mobile devices, modern link technology (‘SpaceWire’), various applications of occam, JCSP and JCSP.net (video processing, robotics, massive multiplayer gaming, material and biological modeling, etc.), visual design languages and tools for CSP and real-time systems, new process oriented programming and design environments, new developments of the Transterpreter, efficient cluster computing and the debugging of message-passing systems.

This volume represents the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Studies Instituteheld near Barga (Italy), July 11-23, 1988, involving over 90 participants from more than twelve countries of Europe, North America and elsewhere. It was not our intention at this meeting to present a complete up-to-the-minute review of current research in enzyme catalysis but t·ather, in accord wi th the intended spiri t of NATO ASis, to gi ve an opportunity for advanced students and researchers in a wide variety of disciplines to meet tagether and study the problern from different points of view. Hence the lectures cover topics rauging from the purely theoretical aspects of chemical reaction kinetics in condensed matter through practical experimental approaches to enzyme structure, dynamics and mechanism, including the new experimental opportunities arising from genetic engineering techniques. Our approachwas unashamedly physical, both because the more biochemical aspects of enzymology are amply covered elsewhere and because progress in our understanding and application of the molecular basis of enzymic processes must ultimately come from advances in physical knowledge. We tried to cover as wide a spectrum as possible, and succeeded in gathering an expert and enthusiastic team of speakers, but there . are some inevitable omissions. In particular, and with hindsight, our discussions might have been enriched by more detailed coverage of general aspects of chemical catalysis - but readers requiring this background should find adequate references herein.

Separation processes in biotechnology are of increasing industrial importance since they entail the major costs of bioprocessing especially when high purity is required. Chromatography and membranes are two of the most important technologies used for direct treatment of fermentation broths as well as for high resolution steps in product purification. The theoretical foundations of chromatographic and membrane processes are well understood for the case of small molecules. Nevertheless there is a need to adapt and further develop that knowledge to the processing of large biological molecules. This is being achieved with the contribution of other areas like molecular biology and materials science. The objective of this NATO Advanced Study Institute is to present an updated treatment of the fundamentals of chromatographic and membrane processes with special relevance in bioprocessing. This volume collects the lectures presented at this Institute. The lectures are arranged in five chapters. Chapter I deals with chromatographic processes covering topics like equilibrium, kinetics and contacting devices. Membrane processes and some applications in biotechnology are treated in chapter 2. Chapter 3 is devoted to affinity chromatographic and membrane processes. Chapter 4 considers the current developments on chromatographic supports and membranes both from the constitutive materials and form points of view. Scale-up, optimization and reaction/separation integration are the topics covered in chapter 5. We are very grateful to all lecturers and participants that made possible this Institute. Financial support from NATO Scientific Affairs Division, INIC, JNICT, FLAD, University of Ac;ores and DRT Ac;ores is gratefully acknowledged.

In this unique volume, renowned experts discuss the applications of fractals in petroleum research-offering an excellent introduction to the subject. Contributions cover a broad spectrum of applications from petroleum exploration to production. Papers also illustrate how fractal geometry can quantify the spatial heterogeneity of different aspects of geology and how this information can be used to improve exploration and production results.

A Short History Of Mathematical Population Dynamics written by Nicolas Bacaër and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-02-01 with Mathematics categories.

As Eugene Wigner stressed, mathematics has proven unreasonably effective in the physical sciences and their technological applications. The role of mathematics in the biological, medical and social sciences has been much more modest but has recently grown thanks to the simulation capacity offered by modern computers. This book traces the history of population dynamics---a theoretical subject closely connected to genetics, ecology, epidemiology and demography---where mathematics has brought significant insights. It presents an overview of the genesis of several important themes: exponential growth, from Euler and Malthus to the Chinese one-child policy; the development of stochastic models, from Mendel's laws and the question of extinction of family names to percolation theory for the spread of epidemics, and chaotic populations, where determinism and randomness intertwine. The reader of this book will see, from a different perspective, the problems that scientists face when governments ask for reliable predictions to help control epidemics (AIDS, SARS, swine flu), manage renewable resources (fishing quotas, spread of genetically modified organisms) or anticipate demographic evolutions such as aging.

Extraction Processes in the Food Industry, a volume in the Unit Operations and Processing Equipment in the Food Industry series, explains the processing operations and equipment necessary for extraction of different food ingredients and nutraceuticals, including conventional and modern extraction techniques. These processes and unit operations are very important in the manufacture of products such as edible oils, sugars, coffee, tea, essential oils, and other products.Divided in three sections, "Different extraction equipment and technologies," "Application of extraction in the food industry," and "Design, control and efficiency of extraction systems," all chapters emphasize basic texts relating to experimental, theoretical, computational, and/or applications of food engineering principles and the relevant processing equipment for extraction unit operations.Written by food engineering experts, Extraction Processes in the Food Industry is a useful resource for industrial engineers working in the field of food processing and within food factories, providing information on particular food processing operations and equipment. - Thoroughly explores novel applications of extraction unit operations in food industries - Helps readers improve the quality and safety of food ingredients using optimum extraction processes - Brings different alternatives for extraction operations
