Starting Out Right: Beginning Band Pedagogy is the only complete resource for organizing, planning, and teaching beginning woodwind, brass, and percussion students. The book covers every aspect of teaching beginning band students from the first sounds on the instruments through the first full-band performances. It is the only comprehensive reference that offers step-by-step guidelines for teaching each beginning band instrument, as well as organizing and running a successful beginning band program. Based on the public school teaching experience of the author, the book is designed for use in undergraduate methods and pedagogy classes as well as for clinics and workshops at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This book is also designed to be a reference for the many novice teachers who lead beginning bands or those teachers whose expertise is not in the band realm. While the focus of the book is on teaching beginning band, much of the book can be of use to band instructors at any grade level. The book is divided into several parts, which cover the sound-to-sign-to-theory approach to teaching musical literacy; child development as it relates to teaching music; recruiting and retaining students; developing fundamental sounds and skills on each woodwind, brass, and percussion instrument; teaching students to read tonal and rhythmic music notation; and selecting and rehearsing beginning band solo, ensemble, and full-band music. The book also addresses curriculum design, scheduling, and staffing of band programs. Ideas about managing student records, inventory, and equipment are also given special attention. Written in a casual narrative style, the book features real-world examples of how the principles in the book might be applied to actual teaching situations. Another special feature of the book is a set of early field-experience application exercises. Starting Out Right guides readers as they explore a comprehensive individual and ensemble approach to teaching each woodwind, brass, and percussion instrument.

Percussion Pedagogy written by Michael Udow and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019 with Music categories.

In Percussion Pedagogy, author Michael Udow offers a practical guide for students interested in teaching percussion as well as improving their technique. Udow first introduces the bouncing ball system, a technical analogy that teaches students to resist the effects of inertia. Throughout the book, the bouncing ball analogy develops into a core performance principle based on integrated motions resulting in refined tone quality and meaningful musicianship. The book applies this principle to several instruments including snare drum, timpani, marimba, vibraphone, multiple-percussion, tambourine and triangle, bass drum, cymbals, tam-tams, and a variety of Western concert and world percussion repertoire. In particular, Udow addresses the importance of coupling stroke types with stickings to set the foundation for precise rhythmic playing and expressive musicality. Chapters also focus on integrated rhythms, breath, and pulsed rhythms, anatomy and physiological health, psychological health, purposeful listening, and the importance of singing when practicing. Offering solutions to common performance problems, the book's many examples serve as a paradigm for future problem solving. A comprehensive companion website complements Udow's teachings with a wealth of video tutorials and listening examples.

If you have ever played in a big band, you’ll know how confusing the notation is. With rhythms written above the stave, strange diagonal slashes and notated drum parts that don’t make sense, it can be very difficult to know where to start. Furthermore, for those taking on the style for the first time the genre lacks materials appropriate for beginners. This frustration is where The Beginner’s Guide to Big Band Drumming arose from. Written by Melbourne drummer Anthony Stanislavski, the book addresses the challenges of reading, short and long note orchestrations, saxophone, trumpet, or trombone section figures, ensemble figures and how to tackle rests and fills, turning them into playable phrases that fit stylistically within a piece with well thought out exercises presented in a logical format. The book contains over 100 exercises and two big band charts written specifically for the book, which also include fully notated drum interpretations. Each exercise and chart come with play-along backing tracks, minus drums, from slow to fast tempos and there are also video and audio demonstrations of all the material covered in the book. By the time a player has finished with this book, they'll have the tools to play as a solid member of a big band as well as the ability to generate and weave in their own style over the solid foundation Anthony has helped them build. This is the perfect resource for both teachers and students alike. Teachers will love the frame and direction and students will love the clarity and ideas that the book provides.

Introduction The ideas in this book-written for beginners, professional drummers, and everyone in between-come from my 30 plus years of studying, playing, and teaching drums. As a student, I did not find one book that covered all of the information I needed to become a proficient drummer; as a veteran teacher of approximately 40 students a week for over 20 years, I wanted to share the methods I have refined in my successful teaching practice. If you are a beginner, this book will help you get started with grip and reading. I present practical applications to show why you are practicing these basic skills and give you advice on how to practice. If you are a professional, the challenging exercises included in here will keep your skills tuned up. I encourage you to build upon the ideas in this book to inspire your playing. Part 1 focuses on grip, technique, and basic reading of rhythms. Part 2 focuses on reading rhythms at all levels proficiently. Part 3 focuses on the 40 standard snare drum rudiments, sticking, and technique exercises. Part 4 focuses on drum set techniques, coordination, grooves, and soloing in different genres of music. Although this book progresses in a logical sequence, I recommend skipping around to work on specific skills. If you can complete this book correctly, you will have a solid foundation and play better at every level. I have also incorporated some of the ideas from great drum books that I've used throughout my years in drumming, which I have named and recommended at the end of this book. Enjoy your process towards better drumming!
