Beberapa tahun terakhir ini kita disuguhkan dengan ramainya tuduhan di media melabeli mereka yang vocal dalam menyampaikan aspirasi keislaman dengan label-label: anti NKRI, anti Persatuan, anti Kebhinekaan, ekstrim, radikal, intoleran, pengusung demokrasi populis, pengusung politik identitas dan sederet label lainnya yang tidak pantas untuk disematkan. Kondisi tersebut tidak hanya terkait dengan masalah kekinian yang terjadi di negeri ini, tapi akar masalahnya terhubung erat dengan pertengkaran ideologis yang tidak selesai efek dari perdebatan di masa lampau di kalangan founding fathers tentang dasar negara. Para founding fathers dahulu terpolarisasi kedalam dua kelompok besar yang bertentangan secara diametral satu sama lain dalam pembahasan dasar negara yakni kelompok nasionalis sekuler dan nasionalis Islam. Hingga Konstituante tengah bersidang a lot untuk menuntaskan pekerjaannya merampungkan rancangan Undang-Undang Dasar pada kurun waktu 1957-1959, tiba-tiba harus terhenti oleh sebuah Dekrit Presiden 5 Juli 1959 yang membubarkan Konstituante dan memberlakukan kembali Undang-Undang Dasar 1945. Kehadiran buku ini tidak lain ialah menyoroti keadaan tersebut dan berbagai dinamika yang terjadi dalam kurun waktu tersebut dengan melihat korelasinya dengan upaya penerapan syari’at Islam di Indonesia yang telah diperjuangkan selama bertahun-tahun melalui jalur konstitusional seperti di BPUPKI maupun di Konstituante.
