At the turn of the century, Armando Palacio Valdes (1853-1938) enjoyed the reputation of being one of Spain's leading novelists. Widely translated into other languages, he was hailed enthusiastically by such foreign critics as Edmund Gosse and William Dean Howells. Acaba en Asturias, en Laviana, y descubre el amor.Se trata de una obra cuyo pr�logo original, escrito por Palacio Vald�s para la tercera edici�n de la novela, supone toda una declaraci�n de intenciones del escritor: "la obra de arte arm�nica no se decanta por los excesos", "lo mejor es el justo medio" o "la fecundidad de un autor no debe medirse por el n�mero de obras, sino por el tiempo que perduran en la memoria de los hombres" son frases que dejan entrever la personalidad del autor.
