Yo fui el ltimo miembro de mi larga familia que emigr desde Colombia a Estados Unidos. Fue al comienzo de la estacin invernal de 1968, cuando llegu a Nueva York con mis dos pequeos hijos, uno de tres y el otro de cinco aos. Mi esposa, que haba viajado meses antes, resida en el condado de Queens en casa de mi madre. Ella, nos esperaba con dos de mis hermanos en el aeropuerto internacional Kennedy, que en los aos 50s yo haba conocido con el nombre de, Idlewild. De igual modo que no hay nada oculto, nada permanece igual o esttico, porque todo cambia. Luego de seis dcadas transcurridas dentro de los siglos XX al XXI, todo aquello que describo en mis memorias, aquello que estuvo conmigo desde mi niez, ya no est ms ah sin haberse mudado, porque todo ha cambiado, o ha evolucionado o ha desaparecido por completo. Los lugares y las personas mencionadas, inexorablemente han debido cambiar por la edad, o el paso del tiempo, que todo lo borra o lo destruye, al perecer. Solo quedan rescoldos de un pasado ignoto y ya casi olvidado. Sin embargo, todo lo vivido queda plasmado en esta pequea historia hilvanada y corregida, para hacerla menos aburrida, desde que la inici, hace ya ms de siete aos, en 2005. Power and Pilgrimage is an in-depth anthropological study of life at a Bolivian pilgrimage site. It focuses on the experiences of pilgrims and how, in their Marian devotion, they express and learn to live with the various inequalities they experience in everyday life. Issues of poverty and class inequality lead them to approach the Virgin of Urkupina to support them in their quest for economic betterment. Another social inequality that comes to the fore is based on gender: in particular Bolivian women seek Mary's support to deal with violence and oppression in their homes. Finally, ethnic inequalities are discussed by analysing the dance processions in honour of the Virgin, since these reflect contested ethnic identities.
