This book is an edited selection of the papers presented at the International Workshop on VLSI for Artifidal Intelligence and Neural Networks which was held at the University of Oxford in September 1990. Our thanks go to all the contributors and especially to the programme committee for all their hard work. Thanks are also due to the ACM-SIGARCH, the IEEE Computer Society, and the lEE for publicizing the event and to the University of Oxford and SUNY-Binghamton for their active support. We are particularly grateful to Anna Morris, Maureen Doherty and Laura Duffy for coping with the administrative problems. Jose Delgado-Frias Will Moore April 1991 vii PROLOGUE Artificial intelligence and neural network algorithms/computing have increased in complexity as well as in the number of applications. This in tum has posed a tremendous need for a larger computational power than can be provided by conventional scalar processors which are oriented towards numeric and data manipulations. Due to the artificial intelligence requirements (symbolic manipulation, knowledge representation, non-deterministic computations and dynamic resource allocation) and neural network computing approach (non-programming and learning), a different set of constraints and demands are imposed on the computer architectures for these applications.

PDSIA '99 was the fourth in a series of international workshops on parallel symbolic computing, a basic yet challenging area with wide applications in high-performance computing. As in the previous meetings, parallel symbolic languages and systems were the major topics. However, reflecting the latest advances in distributed computing systems, the workshop also encompassed wider perspectives in parallel and distributed computing for symbolic and irregular applications.

The growing importance of the systems for symbolic computation has greatly influenced the decision of organizing DISCO '90 which is short for International Symposium on Design and Implementation of Symbolic Computation Systems. DISCO '90 focuses mainly on the most innovative methodological and technological aspects of hardware and software system design and implementation for Symbolic and Algebraic Computation, Automated Reasoning, Software Environments (Languages and User Interfaces), and Automatic Programming. In particular, it includes papers on the design and the development of significant running systems. The general objective of DISCO '90 is to present an up-to-date view of the field, while encouraging the scientific exchange among academic, industrial and user communities of the development of systems for symbolic computation.

"Programming in Lisp" Delve into the profound world of symbolic computation with "Programming in Lisp," a comprehensive volume that illuminates the power and elegance of one of the oldest yet most influential programming languages. Beginning with the historical evolution of Lisp, the book expertly guides readers through the foundational concepts of symbolic expressions, evaluation models, and the distinctive syntactic features that set Lisp apart. By exploring both major dialects and the interactive development process through the REPL, it establishes a thorough understanding of the language’s philosophical roots and practical strengths. Building on these foundations, "Programming in Lisp" transitions into advanced topics crucial for proficient development, including the intricate design of core data structures, functional paradigms such as closures and recursion, and sophisticated control flow mechanisms. Readers will uncover the depths of Lisp’s metaprogramming capabilities through macro systems, learn object-oriented programming via the Common Lisp Object System (CLOS), and demystify implementation strategies such as memory management, compilation, and performance tuning. Each chapter is structured to not only provide conceptual clarity, but also hands-on expertise through detailed examples and comparative analyses of dialects like Scheme and Clojure. In its final chapters, this book brings Lisp into the modern age by examining its dynamic ecosystem and real-world applications—from artificial intelligence and web development to data science and domain-specific languages. Discussions on cutting-edge research, educational impact, and community-driven innovation prepare readers for the future of Lisp. Whether you are a developer aiming to master Lisp’s expressive power or a computer scientist interested in language design, "Programming in Lisp" stands as an essential, authoritative resource for both exploration and practice.

This Festschrift volume includes a collection of papers written in honor of the accomplishments of Professor Yonezawa on the occasion of his 65th birthday in 2012. With a few exceptions, the papers in this Festschrift were presented at an international symposium celebrating this occasion. Also included are reprints of two of Professor Yonezawa's most influential papers on the programming language ABCL. The volume is a testament strong and lasting impact Professor Yonezawa's research accomplishments as well as the inspiration he has been to colleagues and students alike.

Agents Unleashed: A Public Domain Look at Agent Technology covers details of building a secure agent realm. The book discusses the technology for creating seamlessly integrated networks that allow programs to move from machine to machine without leaving a trail of havoc; as well as the technical details of how an agent will move through the network, prove its identity, and execute its code without endangering the host. The text also describes the organization of the host's work processing an agent; error messages, bad agent expulsion, and errors in XLISP-agents; and the simulators of errors, functions, and resources. Agent language, XLISP, TCL and other languages are also considered. The book further tackles security and encryption; commercial cash; and some ambitious and extreme examples of how people are attempting to create agents. The text also encompasses the instructions on how to use the XLISP agents. Software agents will find the book invaluable.
