This book is an introduction to Markov chain modeling with applications to communication networks. It begins with a general introduction to performance modeling in Chapter 1 where we introduce different performance models. We then introduce basic ideas of Markov chain modeling: Markov property, discrete time Markov chain (DTMC) and continuous time Markov chain (CTMC). We also discuss how to find the steady state distributions from these Markov chains and how they can be used to compute the system performance metric. The solution methodologies include a balance equation technique, limiting probability technique, and the uniformization. We try to minimize the theoretical aspects of the Markov chain so that the book is easily accessible to readers without deep mathematical backgrounds. We then introduce how to develop a Markov chain model with simple applications: a forwarding system, a cellular system blocking, slotted ALOHA, Wi-Fi model, and multichannel based LAN model. The examples cover CTMC, DTMC, birth-death process and non birth-death process. We then introduce more difficult examples in Chapter 4, which are related to wireless LAN networks: the Bianchi model and Multi-Channel MAC model with fixed duration. These models are more advanced than those introduced in Chapter 3 because they require more advanced concepts such as renewal-reward theorem and the queueing network model. We introduce these concepts in the appendix as needed so that readers can follow them without difficulty. We hope that this textbook will be helpful to students, researchers, and network practitioners who want to understand and use mathematical modeling techniques. Table of Contents: Performance Modeling / Markov Chain Modeling / Developing Markov Chain Performance Models / Advanced Markov Chain Models

"This open access book brings together the latest developments from industry and research on automated driving and artificial intelligence. Environment perception for highly automated driving heavily employs deep neural networks, facing many challenges. How much data do we need for training and testing? How to use synthetic data to save labeling costs for training? How do we increase robustness and decrease memory usage? For inevitably poor conditions: How do we know that the network is uncertain about its decisions? Can we understand a bit more about what actually happens inside neural networks? This leads to a very practical problem particularly for DNNs employed in automated driving: What are useful validation techniques and how about safety? This book unites the views from both academia and industry, where computer vision and machine learning meet environment perception for highly automated driving. Naturally, aspects of data, robustness, uncertainty quantification, and, last but not least, safety are at the core of it. This book is unique: In its first part, an extended survey of all the relevant aspects is provided. The second part contains the detailed technical elaboration of the various questions mentioned above."--

This monograph presents a concise mathematical approach for modeling and analyzing the performance of communication networks with the aim of introducing an appropriate mathematical framework for modeling and analysis as well as understanding the phenomenon of statistical multiplexing. The models, techniques, and results presented form the core of traffic engineering methods used to design, control and allocate resources in communication networks. The novelty of the monograph is the fresh approach and insights provided by a sample-path methodology for queueing models that highlights the important ideas of Palm distributions associated with traffic models and their role in computing performance measures. The monograph also covers stochastic network theory including Markovian networks. Recent results on network utility optimization and connections to stochastic insensitivity are discussed. Also presented are ideas of large buffer, and many sources asymptotics that play an important role in understanding statistical multiplexing. In particular, the important concept of effective bandwidths as mappings from queueing level phenomena to loss network models is clearly presented along with a detailed discussion of accurate approximations for large networks.

With the rapidly increasing penetration of laptop computers and mobile phones, which are primarily used by mobile users to access Internet s- vices like e-mail and World Wide Web (WWW) access, support of Internet services in a mobile environment is an emerging requirement. Wireless n- works have been used for communication among fully distributed users in a multimedia environment that has the needs to provide real-time bursty traffic (such as voice or video) and data traffic with excellent reliability and service quality. To satisfy the huge wireless multimedia service demand and improve the system performance, efficient channel access methods and analytical methods must be provided. In this way very accurate models, that faithfully reproduce the stochastic behavior of multimedia wireless communication and computer networks, can be constructed. Most of these system models are discrete-time queueing systems. Queueing networks and Markov chains are commonly used for the p- formance and reliability evaluation of computer, communication, and m- ufacturing systems. Although there are quite a few books on the individual topics of queueing networks and Markov chains, we have found none that covers the topics of discrete-time and continuous-time multichannel mul- traffic queueing networks. On the other hand, the design and development of multichannel mul- hop network systems and interconnected network systems or integrated n- works of multimedia traffic require not only such average performance m- sures as the throughput or packet delay but also higher moments of traffic departures and transmission delay.

This volume contains the proceedings of the second joint PAPM-PROBMIV Workshop, held at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, July 25–26, 2002 as part of the Federated Logic Conference (FLoC 2002). The PAPM-PROBMIV workshop results from the combination of two wo- shops: PAPM (Process Algebras and Performance Modeling) and PROBMIV (Probabilistic Methods in Veri?cation). The aim of the joint workshop is to bring together the researchers working across the whole spectrum of techniques for the modeling, speci?cation, analysis, and veri?cation of probabilistic systems. Probability is widely used in the design and analysis of software and hardware systems, as a means to derive e?cient algorithms (e.g. randomization), as a model for unreliable or unpredictable behavior (as in the study of fault-tolerant systems and computer networks), and as a tool to study performance and - pendability properties. The topics of the workshop include speci?cation, m- els, and semantics of probabilistic systems, analysis and veri?cation techniques, probabilistic methods for the veri?cation of non-probabilistic systems, and tools and case studies. The ?rst PAPM workshop was held in Edinburgh in 1993; the following ones were held in Regensberg (1994), Edinburgh (1995), Turin (1996), Enschede (1997), Nice (1998), Zaragoza (1999), and Geneva (2000). The ?rst PROBMIV workshop was held in Indianapolis, Indiana (1998); the next one took place in Eindhoven (1999). In 2000, PROBMIV was replaced by a Dagstuhl seminar on Probabilistic Methods in Veri?cation.

The purpose of this book is to give the reader two things, to paraphrase Mark Twain: Roots to know the basics of modeling networks and Wings to fly away and attempt modeling other proposed systems of interest. The Internet phenomenon is affecting us all in the way we communicate, conduct business, and access information and entertainment. More unforeseen applications are still to come. All of this is due to the existence of an efficient global hi- performance network that connects millions of users and moves information at a high rate with small delay. High-Performance Networks A high-performance network is characterized by two performance measures ba- width and delay. Traditional network design focused mainly on bandwidth planning; the solution to network problems was to add more bandwidth. Nowadays, we have to consider message delay particularly for delay-sensitive applications such as voice and real-time video. Both bandwidth and delay contribute to the performance of the network. Bandwidth can be easily increased by compressing the data, by using links with higher speed, or by transmitting several bits in parallel using sophisticated modulation techniques. Delay, however, is not so easily improved. It can only be reduced by the use of good scheduling protocols, very fast hardware and switching equipment throughout the network. The increasing use of optical fibers means that the transmission channel is close to ideal with extremely high bandwidth and low delay(speedoflight). Theareasthatneedoptimizationaretheinterfacesanddevices that connect the different links together such as hubs, switches, routers, and bridges.
