This is the final report on the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) led-reconnaissance to assess the performance of physical structures during Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. The report describes the environmental conditions (wind speed, storm surge, and flooding) that were present during the hurricanes in regions that were affected by the hurricanes. The report further documents the NIST-led team's observations of damage to major buildings, infrastructure, and residential structures resulting from wind and wind-borne debris, storm surge, surge-borne debris, and surge-induced flooding.

The combination of growing populations moving into large cities in high risk zones increase the risk of natural disasters with a substantial public health consequence. A high population density and rapid air travel increase the spread and effects of plagues and diseases. People in countries with limited resources are more vulnerable to death and other consequences of disasters. This requires global rather than national preparedness and response strategies. Public health organisations, government and non-government organisations can take a leadership role and provide training, organisation and research knowledge to improve responses to such disasters. This book is the first holistic public health approach in relation to natural disasters. It fills the gap to have a one-stop-shopping synopsis of key ideas associated with mediation of public health natural disasters. It is unique in focusing on 'lessons learned' rather than 'what to do'. Published research relating to general responses by public health agencies to disasters is scientifically evaluated. Various types of disasters are reviewed: flooding, diseases, earthquakes, volcanoes, and drought. Long term needs, prevention and individual preparation are taken into account. The information can be used to prepare and mitigate effects of disasters. The summary points at the start of each chapter will help the reader to use as this book as reference book and for educational purpose.

Multi Hazard Approaches To Civil Infrastructure Engineering written by Paolo Gardoni and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-22 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This collection focuses on the development of novel approaches to address one of the most pressing challenges of civil engineering, namely the mitigation of natural hazards. Numerous engineering books to date have focused on, and illustrate considerable progress toward, mitigation of individual hazards (earthquakes, wind, and so forth.). The current volume addresses concerns related to overall safety, sustainability and resilience of the built environment when subject to multiple hazards: natural disaster events that are concurrent and either correlated (e.g., wind and surge); uncorrelated (e.g., earthquake and flood); cascading (e.g., fire following earthquake); or uncorrelated and occurring at different times (e.g., wind and earthquake). The authors examine a range of specific topics including methodologies for vulnerability assessment of structures, new techniques to reduce the system demands through control systems; instrumentation, monitoring and condition assessment of structures and foundations; new techniques for repairing structures that have suffered damage during past events, or for structures that have been found in need of strengthening; development of new design provisions that consider multiple hazards, as well as questions from law and the humanities relevant to the management of natural and human-made hazards.

The Oxford Handbook Of Non Synoptic Wind Storms written by Horia Hangan and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-08-23 with Science categories.

In different areas of the world, much of the damage due to wind is caused by non-synoptic, local wind storm events, such as tornadoes and downbursts. In North America the damage due to these winds is more than 65% of total wind damage, and there are no guidelines or code implementations to deal with such catastrophic events. As we enter the third decade of the twenty-first century, current research is in its first phase of addressing these types of events, from their characterization, simulation, and loading, to collapse-mode effects on buildings and structures, as well as socioeconomic implications. The need is clear to better understand non-synoptic local winds; properly simulate them; assess the difference in loading between these events and synoptic large-scale winds that have been part of the wind engineering practice for more than five decades; determine their statistics and associated risks; and apply this through guidelines, codes, risk mitigation, and adaptation responses to socioeconomic impact. The Oxford Handbook of Non-Synoptic Wind Storms, led by Dr. Horia Hangan and Dr. Ahsan Kareem, features nearly 30 chapters, contributed by an international panel of leading scientists, scholars, and engineers, that address these issues and stimulate thought, research, and responses to non-synoptic wind storm hazards in North America and worldwide. Together, these articles provide clear definitions of the problems to be tackled, offer a strategic framework for forward-looking research, identify the best-suited tools and methodologies to address the problems at hand, and suggest ways to maximize collaborative planning between the disciplines that will tackle these challenges.
