Performing the Sacred: Christian Representation and the Arts explores both the meaning of re-presentation and the role of performance within the Christian tradition between arts and drama. This edited volume discusses images that bleed, speak, cry, move, and behave in ways we usually attribute to living creatures. Living images have been the object of devotion as well as targets of destruction, and they have been marginalised in both culture and cultural studies for their ambivalence as well as their transgressive nature. But what is it that makes images the loci of such powerful properties? The present volume is an attempt to recuperate the living image, draw it from the margins, and re-illuminate its importance for cultural history. The title of this book reflects the ambition of the contributions to navigate between the Middle Ages of the past and the Middle Ages of the present. Our aim is to provide new theoretical reflections and methodologies concerning the study of material agency and “living images” both historically and today. The chapters include close examination of surviving objects and archival research, as well as theoretical reflections, and span chronologically and geographically across Europe from North to South, medieval to modern. This comprehensive and cross-cultural study examines three-dimensional structural replicas of the Santa Casa, or Holy House of the Virgin Mary, and related circulating visual and textual media. Interdisciplinary in its design, the project engages with a broad spectrum of cultures and lay strata, redirecting early modern studies to prioritize anonymously produced Catholic cult objects and devotional memorabilia, disseminated largely between the fifteenth through early nineteenth centuries. By tracing the formation and evolution of Loretan iconography and cult space in two and three dimensions, this publication illuminates the spread of the popular structure as a sculptural cult object and its worship via replication. By combining art historical questions of materiality and form with broader anthropological and social history concerns regarding information production, dissemination, and reception, this book reveals how early modern Catholics capitalized on cult replicas. The impetus of religious reform between ca. 1380-1520, which expressed itself in a variety of Observant initiatives in many religious orders all over Europe, and also brought forth the Devotio moderna movement in the late medieval Low Countries, had considerable repercussions for the production of a wide range of religious texts, and the embrace of other forms of cultural production (scribal activities, liturgical innovations, art, music, religious architecture). At the same time, the very impetus of reform within late medieval religious orders and the wish to return to a more modest religious lifestyle in accordance with monastic and mendicant rules, and ultimately with the commands of Christ in the Gospel, made it difficult to wholeheartedly embrace the material consequences of learning, literary and artistic prowess, as the very pursuit of such pursuits ran against basic demands of evangelical poverty and humility. This volume explores how this tension was negotiated in various Observant and Devotio moderna contexts, and how communities connected with these movements instrumentalized various types of writing, learning, and other forms of cultural expression to further the cause of religious reform, defend it against order-internal and external criticism, to shape recognizable reform identities for themselves, and to transform religious life in society as a whole.
