Buku ini merupakan pengembangan atas tesis penulis di STF Driyarkara, Jakarta. Tesis kebenaran sebagai subjektivitas yang diungkapkan oleh Kierkegaard merupakan ungkapan yang fenomenal mengenai relasi manusia dengan Tuhan. Bagi Kierkegaard, menghidupi kebenaran secara subjektif bukanlah soal melaksanakan ajaran agama, melainkan soal relasi pribadi dengan Tuhan. Dalam Concluding Unscientific Postscript, Kierkegaard berbicara banyak tentang relasi individu dengan Tuhan dan bukan tentang agama. Banyak orang yang melaksanakan ajaran agama, akan tetapi mungkin hanya sedikit orang yang memiliki relasi yang intim dengan Tuhan. Justru sebaliknya, orang yang benar-benar memiliki relasi intim dengan Tuhan mendapatkan perlawanan dalam agama karena pandangan dan kegiatannya dianggap membahayakan ‘sistem’ dan ajaran yang sudah ada. Individu yang demikian banyak dijauhkan dan harus berjuang sendirian. Kierkegaard dalam Fear and Trembling mengatakan banyak orang tidak memahami individu seperti ini, terkadang ia harus berjalan di lorong yang sempit. Walaupun jalan yang ia lalui terjal dan tidak mudah, namun ia percaya dengan jalan itulah ia menekuni hidup yang autentik dan terhindar dari macam bentuk kepalsuan.
