A survey of current knowledge about Hamiltonian systems with three or more degrees of freedom and related topics. The Hamiltonian systems appearing in most of the applications are non-integrable. Hence methods to prove non-integrability results are presented and the different meaning attributed to non-integrability are discussed. For systems near an integrable one, it can be shown that, under suitable conditions, some parts of the integrable structure, most of the invariant tori, survive. Many of the papers discuss near-integrable systems. From a topological point of view, some singularities must appear in different problems, either caustics, geodesics, moving wavefronts, etc. This is also related to singularities in the projections of invariant objects, and can be used as a signature of these objects. Hyperbolic dynamics appear as a source on unpredictable behaviour and several mechanisms of hyperbolicity are presented. The destruction of tori leads to Aubrey-Mather objects, and this is touched on for a related class of systems. Examples without periodic orbits are constructed, against a classical conjecture. Other topics concern higher dimensional systems, either finite (networks and localised vibrations on them) or infinite, like the quasiperiodic Schrödinger operator or nonlinear hyperbolic PDE displaying quasiperiodic solutions. Most of the applications presented concern celestial mechanics problems, like the asteroid problem, the design of spacecraft orbits, and methods to compute periodic solutions.

Periodic Solutions Of The N Body Problem written by Kenneth R. Meyer and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-11-17 with Mathematics categories.

The N-body problem is the classical prototype of a Hamiltonian system with a large symmetry group and many first integrals. These lecture notes are an introduction to the theory of periodic solutions of such Hamiltonian systems. From a generic point of view the N-body problem is highly degenerate. It is invariant under the symmetry group of Euclidean motions and admits linear momentum, angular momentum and energy as integrals. Therefore, the integrals and symmetries must be confronted head on, which leads to the definition of the reduced space where all the known integrals and symmetries have been eliminated. It is on the reduced space that one can hope for a nonsingular Jacobian without imposing extra symmetries. These lecture notes are intended for graduate students and researchers in mathematics or celestial mechanics with some knowledge of the theory of ODE or dynamical system theory. The first six chapters develops the theory of Hamiltonian systems, symplectic transformations and coordinates, periodic solutions and their multipliers, symplectic scaling, the reduced space etc. The remaining six chapters contain theorems which establish the existence of periodic solutions of the N-body problem on the reduced space.

The aim of the IV International Symposium on Hamiltonian Systems and Celestial Mechanics, HAMSYS-2001 was to join top researchers in the area of Celestial Mechanics, Hamiltonian systems and related topics in order to communicate new results and look forward for join research projects. For PhD students, this meeting offered also the opportunity of personal contact to help themselves in their own research, to call as well and promote the attention of young researchers and graduated students from our scientific community to the above topics, which are nowadays of interest and relevance in Celestial Mechanics and Hamiltonian dynamics. A glance to the achievements in the area in the last century came as a consequence of joint discussions in the workshop sessions, new problems were presented and lines of future research were delineated. Specific discussion topics included: New periodic orbits and choreographies in the n-body problem, singularities in few body problems, central configurations, restricted three body problem, geometrical mechanics, dynamics of charged problems, area preserving maps and Arnold diffusion.

This book provides an up-to-date description of the methods needed to face the existence of solutions to some nonlinear boundary value problems. All important and interesting aspects of the theory of periodic solutions of ordinary differential equations related to the physical and mathematical question of resonance are treated. The author has chosen as a model example the periodic problem for a second order scalar differential equation. In a paedagogical style the author takes the reader step by step from the basics to the most advanced existence results in the field.

The book is devoted to partial differential equations of Hamiltonian form, close to integrable equations. For such equations a KAM-like theorem is proved, stating that solutions of the unperturbed equation that are quasiperiodic in time mostly persist in the perturbed one. The theorem is applied to classical nonlinear PDE's with one-dimensional space variable such as the nonlinear string and nonlinear Schr|dinger equation andshow that the equations have "regular" (=time-quasiperiodic and time-periodic) solutions in rich supply. These results cannot be obtained by other techniques. The book will thus be of interest to mathematicians and physicists working with nonlinear PDE's. An extensivesummary of the results and of related topics is provided in the Introduction. All the nontraditional material used is discussed in the firstpart of the book and in five appendices.

FACHGEB The last decade has seen a tremendous development in critical point theory in infinite dimensional spaces and its application to nonlinear boundary value problems. In particular, striking results were obtained in the classical problem of periodic solutions of Hamiltonian systems. This book provides a systematic presentation of the most basic tools of critical point theory: minimization, convex functions and Fenchel transform, dual least action principle, Ekeland variational principle, minimax methods, Lusternik- Schirelmann theory for Z2 and S1 symmetries, Morse theory for possibly degenerate critical points and non-degenerate critical manifolds. Each technique is illustrated by applications to the discussion of the existence, multiplicity, and bifurcation of the periodic solutions of Hamiltonian systems. Among the treated questions are the periodic solutions with fixed period or fixed energy of autonomous systems, the existence of subharmonics in the non-autonomous case, the asymptotically linear Hamiltonian systems, free and forced superlinear problems. Application of those results to the equations of mechanical pendulum, to Josephson systems of solid state physics and to questions from celestial mechanics are given. The aim of the book is to introduce a reader familiar to more classical techniques of ordinary differential equations to the powerful approach of modern critical point theory. The style of the exposition has been adapted to this goal. The new topological tools are introduced in a progressive but detailed way and immediately applied to differential equation problems. The abstract tools can also be applied to partial differential equations and the reader will also find the basic references in this direction in the bibliography of more than 500 items which concludes the book. This book contains selected papers from the AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference on Hamiltonian Systems and Celestial Mechanics held in Seattle in June 1995. The symbiotic relationship of these two topics creates a natural combination for a conference on dynamics. The topics covered include twist maps, the Aubrey-Mather theory, Arnold diffusion, qualitative and topological studies of systems, and variational methods, as well as specific topics such as Melnikov's procedure and the singularity properties of particular systems. As one of the few books that addresses both Hamiltonian systems and celestial mechanics, this volume offers emphasis on new issues and unsolved problems. Many of the papers give new results, yet the editors purposely included some exploratory papers based on numerical computations, a section on unsolved problems, and papers that pose conjectures while developing what is known. It features open research problems, and papers on central configurations.
