En este proposito cumple un papel fundamental la cronica, desde su etimologia: Chronos, tiempo; este genero se ha encargado de registrar la sucesion temporal desde que el ser humano adquirio el lenguaje, desde esa feliz conjuncion entre lengua y habla. El periodismo narrativo tiene una infinita posibilidad de dejar huella. En los papeles amarillentos, llenos de acaros y de tinta reseca, tambien existen millones de historias y fragmentos de historia."

El teórico Marc Weingarten sostiene que la crónica, el perfil y el reportaje surgieron por una necesidad histórica. Los datos convencionales se quedaban cortos a la hora de cubrir ciertos cambios culturales y sociales, como las guerras, los asesinatos, el rock, las drogas, las luchas raciales y el hippismo. “¿Cómo podría un reportero tradicional, que se ajustaba tan sólo a los hechos, proporcionar un orden claro y simétrico a semejante caos?”, se preguntaba.
