A unique reference on peripheral pain receptor mechanisms While considerable advances have been made on pharmacotherapies for many chronic disease states, options available to treat chronic pain have remained relatively unchanged for decades. However, utilizing the receptors involved in peripheral pain transduction mechanisms offers a significant opportunity to create novel therapies for pain. A comprehensive review of peripheral pain mechanisms, Peripheral Receptor Targets for Analgesia: Novel Approaches to Pain Management provides a unique resource that brings together a body of knowledge that was previously widely dispersed. As such, it gives readers a framework for further basic and clinical studies on potential receptor targets, as well as the development of improved topical analgesics. Coverage includes: The latest discoveries by leading researchers relating to the function of various ion channels and receptors in the peripheral nervous system Novel delivery techniques An appendix listing currently available topical analgesic medications A Foreword by Professor Lars Arendt-Nielsen of the Center for Sensory-Motor Interaction (SMI) at Aalborg University An unmatched resource for improving drug therapies and making pain management more efficient, Peripheral Receptor Targets for Analgesia supplies pharmaceutical scientists, pharmacologists, neuroscientists, and graduate and upper-level undergraduate students with a comprehensive, up-to-date reference.

Immune Mechanisms Of Pain And Analgesia written by Halina Machelska and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-01-31 with Science categories.

Immune Mechanisms of Pain and Analgesia is the first volume to discuss a new concept of immune-neural interplays leading to pain or analgesia. It argues the classical view that pain and its control are restricted to the nervous system, offering a comprehensive overview of the emerging area of immune mechanisms in pain and its control. It challenges the traditional view that pain sensation or suppression is attributed exclusively to the nervous system and presents a critical analysis of this new concept. The book is written by an internationally recognized group of researchers and discusses complex and controversial issues such as cytokines and their pain-exacerbating but also analgesic effects, the production of opioids by immune cells, peripheral analgesic and anti-inflammatory actions of opioids, immunomodulatory effects of opiates, and immunosuppressive effects of pain.

The interest in opioids such as morphine, the prototypical opioid ligand, has been maintained through the years. The identification of endogenous opioids and their receptors (mu, delta, kappa, and nociceptin), molecular cloning, and the elucidation of the crystal structures of opioid receptors represent key milestones in opioid research. The opioid system modulates numerous pharmacological responses, with therapeutic (i.e., analgesia) and detrimental side effects (i.e., addiction). The medical use and misuse of opioids have dramatically increased, leading to the 21st century opioid crisis. This book presents recent developments in opioid drug discovery, specifically in the medicinal chemistry and pharmacology of new ligands targeting the opioid receptors as effective and safe therapeutics for human diseases. Furthermore, it draws a special attention to advancing concepts and strategies in opioid drug discovery to mitigate opioid liabilities. The diversity among the discussed topics is a testimony to the complexity of the opioid system, which results from the expression, regulation, and functional role of ligands and receptors. The array of multidisciplinary research areas illustrates the rapidly developing basic research and translational activities in opioid drug discovery. This book will serve as a useful reference while also stimulating continued research in the chemistry and pharmacology of opioids and their receptors, with the prospect of developing improved therapies for human diseases, but also improving health and quality of life in general.

Neuropathies are one of the main neurological problems in everyday life, and they still have many partially understood parts and unknowns both for physicians and patients. Many systemic conditions may exist within them and therefore they may be difficult to treat. In this book we provide current knowledge concerning neuropathies, which we believe you will find interesting. The subject ''neuropathies'' comprises a number of topics, and each and every one could be the subject of a textbook. On the other hand, this book was never designed as one. This book should be read without prejudgment because the content may not be compatible with general but repeated assumptions and guidelines. However, I believe that the book may be an inspiration for many young investigators as well. It contains current approaches and knowledge and we sincerely believe and hope that it will answer your queries regarding new perspectives about neuropathy in general.

Since the beginning of times, pain treatment has been the motive of research giving birth to multiple groups of pharmacological families and therapies. Pain perception is a construction built over the biological phenomenon of signal transduction surrounded by different factors such as gender, age, and sociocultural status, among others. The concept of pain as the solely biological manifestation of defense is nowadays considered as a narrow-minded view of this topic. In this regard concepts such as newborns feel no pain or older people complain about everything therefore should not be paid attention when referring pain, are being left behind in the understanding that pain alleviation is a human right and everybody feeling pain should be helped for its relief. This book comprises many aspects of pain treatment and the drugs involved in it. From old analgesics with new mechanisms of action for pain alleviation to analgesics potential for diminishing oxidative stress; from pharmacological therapies to electrical ones, going through alternative medicine; and from pain treatment in dentistry to chronic pain therapies, also boarding the treatment of migraine, different experts share their knowledge on the topic.

The tachykinins represent one of the most thoroughly investigated family of neuropeptides, whose members and receptors have been characterized at the genetic and molecular level and whose pharmacology has now been advanced to the first clinical application. These exciting accomplishments and prospects are reviewed and discussed in this volume in an authoritative manner. Particular emphasis is laid on the development of selective non-peptide antagonists for all 3 tachykinin receptors and their potential as novel drugs in a variety of diseases. The approval of the first tachykinin receptor antagonist as an antiemetic drug is particularly highlighted, and the utility of tachykinin receptor antagonists in affective disorders, chronic obstructive airway disease and irritable bowel syndrome, to name a few indications, is extensively considered.
