Chronic and persistent pain, which is a problem for the individual who suffers and the society that has to deal with it, has become increasingly appreciated. Over the last three decades, several books and journals have been specifically devoted to the topic of pain, especially chronic and persistent pain. It has been increasingly recognized that chronic and persistent pain, unlike acute pain, involves significant psychosocial factors and requires treatment strategies that deal with these issues. All measurements and factors that affect improvement seem to be in the psychosocial area rather than the medical/ biological/physical areas. Psychosocial conveys the importance of the environmental and interpersonal factors of the patient's functioning. The writing of this book has brought together some of the leading researchers and clinicians in the area of managing the patient with chronic pain. The authors express their opinions based on experience and review of the literature available to date. Each of the chapters focuses on an important element of the assessment and/or treatment intervention utilized for the individual with chronic pain. The concluding chapter summarizes the status of the assessment and treatment strategies for those patients.

The area of rehabilitation research for patients having persistent pain is on the move. The rapid growth in pain science has inspired rehabilitation clinicians and researchers around the globe. This has led to breakthrough research and implementation of modern pain science in rehabilitation settings around the world. Still, our understanding of persistent pain continues to grow, not in the least because of fascinating discoveries from areas such as psychoneuroimmunology, exercise physiology, clinical psychology and nutritional (neuro)biology. This offers unique opportunities to further improve rehabilitation for patients with chronic pain across the lifespan. Also, the diversity of health care disciplines involved in the rehabilitation of chronic pain (e.g. physicians, psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses, coaches) provides a framework for upgrading rehabilitation for chronic pain towards comprehensive lifestyle approaches.

Self Management For Persistent Pain written by Karen Rodham and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-22 with Psychology categories.

This book critiques the current approach to the self-management of persistent pain. The drive towards self-management of chronic pain is flourishing as healthcare systems struggle to facilitate the care of those with long term health conditions. In this book Karen Rodham argues that albeit an empowering idea, self-management has not yet been fully translated from idea to practice and as such, runs the risk of blaming and shaming the person living with a chronic condition for failing to manage their condition effectively. She contends that the additional stress of this tension may in fact worsen their condition. Drawing from the research evidence as well as her practice experience, she advocates a move away from the terms ‘self’ and ‘management’ towards a more collaborative approach. One which takes account of the life-context of the person who is living with persistent pain. This book explores the shortcomings of the tendency to focus on self-management without taking into account life context and considers how we got here and what can be done. It will be a valuable resource to researchers and practitioners, especially in the field of health psychology.

It is only natural for someone in pain to attend to the body part that hurts. Yet this book tells the story of persistent pain having negative effects on brain function. The contributors, all leading experts in their respective fields of pain electrophysiology, brain imaging, and animal models of pain, strive to synthesize compelling and, in some ways, connected hypotheses with regard to pain-related changes in the brain. Together, they contribute their clinical, academic, and theoretical expertise in a comprehensive overview that attempts to define the broader philosophical context of pain (disentangling sensical from nonsensical claims), list the changes known to take place in the brains of individuals with chronic pain and animal models of pain, address the possible causes and mechanisms underlying these changes, and detail the techniques and analytical methods at our disposal to "visualize" and study these changes. Philosophical and social concepts of pain; testimonials of chronic-pain patients Clinical data from pain patients’ brains Advances in noninvasive brain imaging for pain patients Combining theoretical and empirical approaches to the analysis of pain-related brain function Manipulation of brain function in animal models Emerging neurotechnology principles for pain diagnostics and therapeutics
