The trending conversations amongst teachers and other professionals are showing that detention rates for student school behaviors are climbing drastically; thus, the stress on teachers also rises as they are pressured to teach a curriculum so their students can be prepared to take the end of year test. Yet, when asked by many teachers, they attest that more time is spent on controlling the classroom than on actual teaching. There can be several reasons why student behaviors have plummeted, however, this course is built on the preface that rather than to explore the reasons that caused the stats, we should address and teach Personal Development and SELF DISCIPLINE skills to empower the students as individuals. Starting at an early age, students can learn and unlearn behaviors. Parents fall into the era of being stressed as they attempt to parent their kids while they fight the economic battle of providing for their family. This challenge belongs to all of us to help mold the next generation of leaders.

This book is intended to motivate persons working in the human and social service occupations toward fuller personal development as well as to improve professional competence. The first part discusses the process of becoming a more fully functioning person. Human potential, barriers to personal growth, self-fulfillment, and seeking pathways to growth are all discussed. An emerging framework for holistic education is also examined. Wellness as a way of life, and coping with the stresses of life are discussed. The second part looks at feelings and their purpose. Understanding feelings and interpreting the language of feelings are examined. Protecting, defending, and enhancing self-esteem are discussed. Management of feelings is explained, and the meaning of encouragement is explored as the essential element in the human interaction process that facilitates growth and change. Symptoms and sources of discouragement are examined. The Adlerian concept of encouragement is extended to the role of encouragement in developing human potential and the realization of human possibilities. The third part examines the concept of creativity. Methods for activating the imagination are explored. The importance of values is addressed, including a discussion on the function of guilt and the role of values in decision making. The fourth part describes types of stressors. Techniques of physical exercise and relaxation are described as means for preventing the harmful effects of stress. Two approaches for coping with stress are presented. (LLL)

"This book is the second in a series entitled ‘Learning and Development for a Better World’ and it explores the potential for self-directed lifelong action learning (LAL) by focusing on the design of development pathways with and for young adults. The book considers the reasons why LAL pathways are needed and draws on innovative approaches used by the Global University for Lifelong Learning (including micro enterprise, peace-building, music, sport and the creative arts) with examples from nine countries. The aim is to offer a timely response to the pressing global problem of access to learning and development for marginalized young people during the vulnerable period from their mid-teens to mid-twenties. This book is an engaging and compelling text. I enjoyed the flow of ideas and the key messages of need and solution that it provides. The authors are articulate and convincing in their crafted messages – as well as passionate. Reading this book is time well spent and both enjoyable and instructional.Brendan Bartlett, Professor of Education, Institute of Learning Sciences Australia, Australian Catholic University This book will help both policy makers and those working with young people to change lives. In many areas of the world, young people, particularly women, lead impoverished lives. Developing approaches to lifelong action learning with these young adults will provide hope for the future. Emer Clarke, Formerly Area Director of the UK Learning and Skills Council The plight of millions of young people is clearly worsening as social and economic divisions increase and deepen. This book will serve those well who want to agitate for change and reform based on a belief in social justice and equality of access to learning and economic fairness for all young people.David Davies, Professor Emeritus and Former Executive Dean, University of Derby, UK This book is a valuable resource, an indispensable text and a must read for all working with young people. What captured my attention most was the way in which it illustrates how access to purposeful learning and development can be provided to marginalized young people. Eldrie Gouws, Professor, Department of Psychology of Education, University of South Africa This is a significant and far reaching response to the global problem of young adults’ unemployment and lack of educational opportunities, especially in disadvantaged, remote and poverty-stricken communities in developing as well as developed countries. It is of interest to a wide audience of readers, including youth, parents, educators, non-profit organizations, governments and churches.Ortrun Zuber-Skerritt, Co-author, ‘Lifelong Action Learning for Community Development: Learning and Development for a Better World’, Sense Publishers, 2013"div v>

Pathways Through Adolescence written by Lisa J. Crockett and has been published by Psychology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-03-05 with Psychology categories.

Adolescent researchers are increasingly aware that they must examine development both across time and across context. To do so, however, requires new conceptualizations and methodological approaches to the study of development, including attention to the pathways young people choose in adolescence and follow into adulthood. This volume assembles work by key researchers in the field who are struggling to understand how developmental trajectories are constructed and maintained throughout the adolescent period. A complete understanding of developmental pathways requires the recognition that adolescents' social contexts--family, school, neighborhood, and/or peer group--are important influences on the choices they make at this developmental period. Researchers have traditionally studied contexts in isolation rather than examining the interrelationships among contexts and their implications for adolescent development. The present volume seeks to address this gap in the literature, with attention given not only to the interrelationships among contexts for white, middle-class youth, but also to these issues for minority adolescents in neighborhoods that vary in terms of access to resources. It concludes with an examination of researcher-community collaboration as a strategy to move communities toward a greater awareness of adolescent development and the problems facing youth in their community, and as a means to promote potential avenues for policy change and intervention.

Social and personal development of pupils is an area of growing interest. However, while much has been done in relation to provision for development, there is little available on how teachers might assess the development of pupils, be it spiritual, moral, social or cultural. The contributors also examine how we might accredit such development. With provision for development on the national agenda, this title looks at the repercussions and examines the difficult issues raised by assessment and accreditation - and the problems with which teachers will inevitably be faced.
