Do you dread writing notes to say "Thank you," "I'm sorry," or "Congratulations"? When's the last time you sent a handwritten letter to a faraway friend, just to catch up? What should you write to a grieving friend or colleague? How do you let friends know you're getting a divorce? As our lives get busier and faster-paced, the old-fashioned art of personal correspondence is becoming sadly lost. In this upbeat, wise, and witty guide, journalist and lifestyle expert Sandra Lamb offers a wealth of advice, inspiration, and examples for anyone who wants to add flair, voice, and plain old fun to their letters and notes---as well as anyone who wants to know the etiquette of when and what to write. Using colorful examples and practical advice, the book covers thank yous, congratulations, engagements and weddings, birthdays and anniversaries, births and adoptions, appreciation, love notes, illness and accidents, divorce, condolence, regrets, apologies, and forgiveness. This delightful, indispensable guide helps us rediscover the joy of connecting with others through the simple act of putting pen to paper.

Though best known for aircraft and aerospace technology, Boeing has invested significant time and money in the construction and promotion of its corporate culture. Boeing's leaders, in keeping with the standard of traditional American social norms, began to promote a workplace culture of a white, heterosexual family model in the 1930s in an attempt to provide a sense of stability for their labor force during a series of enormous political, social, and economic disruptions. For both managers and workers, the construction of a masculine culture solved problems that technological innovation and profit could not. For managers it offered a way to govern employees and check the power of unions. For male employees, it offered a sense of stability that higher wages and the uncertainties of the airline market could not. For scholar Polly Reed Myers, Boeing's corporate culture offers a case study for understanding how labor and the workplace have evolved over the course of the twentieth century and into the present day amid the rise of neoliberal capitalism, globalization, and women's rights. Capitalist Family Values places the stories of Boeing's women at the center of the company's history, illuminating the policy shifts and economic changes, global events and modern controversies that have defined policy and workplace culture at Boeing. Using archival documents that include company newspapers, interviews, and historic court cases, Capitalist Family Values illustrates the changing concepts of corporate culture and the rhetoric of a "workplace family" in connection with economic, political, and social changes, providing insight into the operations of one of America's most powerful and influential firms.

From the late 1950s to 1976, the U.S. human spaceflight program advanced as it did largely due to the extraordinary efforts of Austrian immigrant George M. Low. Described as the "ultimate engineer" during his career at NASA, Low was a visionary architect and leader from the agency's inception in 1958 to his retirement in 1976. As chief of manned spaceflight at NASA, Low was instrumental in the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs. At the end of his NASA career, Low was one of the leading figures in the development of the Space Shuttle in the early 1970s, and he was instrumental in NASA's transition into a post-Apollo world. Chronicling Low's escape from Nazi-occupied Austria to his helping land a man on the moon, The Ultimate Engineer sheds new light on one of the most fascinating and complex personalities of the golden age of U.S. human space travel.

Prisoners of Hope explores the successful drive for positive change and the evolving role of U.S.-based NGOs within the global movement for justice and sustainability. How can these organizations amplify the role of local civil society and empower leaders in complex environments? What steps must they take to remain relevant in cross-border partnerships? Through fresh insights, personal anecdotes, and collective wisdom, the book offers a nuanced analysis of the challenges and opportunities facing U.S. NGOs. While these organizations have transformed millions of lives through human-centered development and humanitarian response, they must adapt—shifting power to local actors and redefining their accountability to donors. The author reflects on the power of collective advocacy, highlighting lessons from their leadership of InterAction. Standalone chapters offer valuable resources for students and practitioners. Key topics include advocacy and pluralism (Building a Voice); the history and role of NGOs (An Appropriate Role); localization (Going Local); advancing the SDGs (Global Goals and Hurdles); humanitarian response (Humanitarian Action); risk management and accountability (Effective Change Agents); leading NGOs and coalitions (NGO Leadership); and future recommendations (A Relevant Future). The true heroes of our world—those who improve human welfare or save lives—are often from impacted communities. With the right tools, institutional support, and commitment there is no shortage of partners to advance positive change. Prisoners of Hope celebrates humanity’s collective efforts to build a better world. It honors grassroots organizations striving for justice and sustainability, affirming their essential role in shaping a more just, equitable, and sustainable future.
