The relationship among preadmission characteristics of students, admission policies, and different measures of success during college was studied at nine colleges: Bucknell University, Colgate University, Hartwick College, Kalamazoo College, Kenyon College, Occidental College, Ohio Wesleyan University, University of Richmond, and Williams College. An overview is provided of the first phase of the study, which focused on the effect of personal qualities on admissions decisions for about 25,000 applicants to the nine colleges. For the 4,814 students who subsequently enrolled, the effect of personal qualities on college success was assessed in the second study phase. After describing some prototype studies on success in college, the question of how to measure success in college is addressed. Information is provided on the students' accumulated record of achievement over 4 years, including yearly grade point averages and attainment measures, scholarship, leadership, and significant accomplishments. Consideration is given to the prediction of yearly grades and the question of whether nonacademic, preadmissions information was helpful in predicting college success. The students' view of success and practical implications of the findings are also discussed, along with a proposed recruitment strategy. The questionnaire is appended. (SW)

A study of the relationship of preadmission characteristics of students was conducted across nine colleges with over 25,000 applicants and 4,800 admitted students. Among the findings are: ratings by college staff were influential in admission decisions, but students so identified were not likely to achieve higher grades or persist into sophomore year at a rate higher than would be predicted by high school grades and test scores; at the most selective institutions, various personal qualities played an important role in selection, whereas colleges rejecting fewer applicants relied less on these qualities; and minority status, college affiliation (e.g., alumni), and ratings by admission staff were more highly related to admission decisions than other sources of data on personal qualities.

Research demonstrates the need for counsellors and psychologists to possess certain personal qualities to be effective practitioners (e.g., Jennings & Skovholt, 1999). However, the degree to which some of these characteristics can be taught during graduate school is questionable (Pope & Kline, 1999), and, thus, some researchers argue that personal qualities are an important factor to assess during the admissions process (Halinski, 2009; McCaughan & Hill, 2015). However, little is known about how personal quality considerations are incorporated into the admissions process for Canadian master's programs in counselling and counselling psychology. This study serves as a preliminary exploration of how a subset of Canadian faculty consider and assess personal qualities during admissions reviews for said programs. Participants were interviewed to explore the counsellor personal qualities deemed important by each individual as well as how such considerations currently, and might ideally, play into admissions decisions. Themes arising from these semi-structured interviews and their implications for future research and practice are explored.

A study was conducted to examine the frequency of personality types among admissions ambassadors in Utah. The study examined the relationship between personality and overall job performance ratings. One hundred thirty-two participants from five colleges and universities in Utah were surveyed to determine their personality type. The personality types were identified using the Keirsey Temperament Sorter personality test. The four types of personalities used in this test are artisans, guardians, idealists, and rationals. The same participants were then rated by their supervisors based on their performance as admissions ambassadors. Individual interviews were conducted with the ambassador supervisors from each of the schools in order to determine what categories should be used to measure job performance of the participants. These interviews were also used to define an appropriate performance rating scale. The frequencies of personality types revealed a significant difference in the types of personalities among the participants. There was also significance found in the relationship between the different personality types and performance ratings. It was discovered that the individuals conducting the performance evaluation sat certain schools gave significantly higher ratings in comparison to other individuals.
