Psychiatry and clinical psychology have long been divided about the roles of nature and nurture in the pathways to psychopathology. Some clinicians offer treatment almost entirely based on neuroscience. Some psychologists offer psychotherapies almost entirely based on the impact of environmental stressors. Paris argues for a balanced middle ground between nature and nurture in human development. This book reviews and integrates research showing that the key to understanding the development of mental disorders lies in interactions between genes and environment. It explores why personality is a key determinant of how people respond to stress, functioning as a kind of psychological immune system. This model represents a shift from overly simple and reductionistic constructs, based primarily on biological risks or on psychosocial risks in development. Instead, it offers a complex and multivariate approach that encourages a broader approach to treatment. This book is essential for all mental health clinicians who are interested in understanding the roles of nature and nurture in the development of psychopathology.

This book presents an introduction to the study of relationships among per sonality, social skills, and psychopathology. Although research findings dur ing the last decade have made it clear that the relationships among these variables are almost always complex and mUltiply determined, many clini cians and theoreticians have not incorporated such complexities into their models of human behavior and therapeutic intervention. This discrepancy between clinical theory and research-based findings has been of special con cern to us because we have been both empirically oriented academic re searchers and practicing clinicians. It is our belief that clinical theory relat ed to personality, social skills, and psychopathology can be enriched by re search findings from a wide range of fields-from human genetics, tempera ment, and personality to family systems, affect, psychophysiology, and learning. This book is divided into an introductory chapter and three sections. The introductory chapter provides an overview of the issues in the field, compares models, and provides suggestions for further integration and ar ticulation of concepts related to personality, social skills, and psycho pathology. The book's first section presents state-of-the-art general models of interactions among personality, social skills, and psychopathology. Con nolly opens this section with a chapter that reviews longitudinal findings in dicating that personality traits predict the onset of psychopathology and marital distress. The etiology of these and related findings is the subject of other chapters in this section.

Significant developments within the past few years have made possible the publication of this rather large volume focusing on specific emotions of human experience, such as interest, joy, anger, distress, fear, shame, shyness, and guilt. The relevant events include new evidence on the relationship of emotions to cognitive processes and to personality traits and defense mechanisms. They also include discoveries relating to the biological foundations of emotions and theory regarding their significance in human evolution. Finally, there have been important findings on the role of emotions and emotion expressions in social relations, pain, grief, and psychopathology. These developments are elaborated in the pages of this volume. The contributors represent the disciplines of clinical, social, and experi mental psychology, psychiatry, and psychoanalysis. The contributions show important common themes that cut across disciplines, but they also reflect some differences that invite further thought and research. Above all, they add to our knowledge of human emotions and to our ability to understand and resolve human problems. The Department of Psychology of the University of Delaware has pro vided an excellent intellectual climate for work on a volume that ranges across several specialities and disciplines. Conversations with colleagues in the offices and hallways of Wolf Hall have provided answers to many questions. They also yielded some questions that compelled me to seek greater clarification of an issue.

Under the scrutiny of feminist theory, traditional theories of personality and psychopathology are shown to be inadequate primarily because the theories reflect the biased cultural norms in which they were developed. Some limitations include their constricted views of human nature, their narrowly constructed definitions of mental health and mental disorder, and their lack of accounting for the many forces that affect human development and functioning. Synthesizing over 20 years of feminist thinking, this volume presents original critiques of mainstream psychological theories and lays the groundwork for the development of a context-based, feminist psychological theory. The first and only volume to present a specifically feminist perspective on the theoretical and conceptual foundations of treatment, Personality and Psychopathology is an essential text for upper-level courses in personality, psychopathology, and the psychology of women. Providing invaluable insights, it is necessary reading for mainstream and feminist therapists of all disciplines.

In Personality and Psychopathology, Millon provides the reader with a coordinated series of papers that illustrate his unprecedented model for building a unified science of personology and psychopathology. In this effort, he seeks to integrate previously disparate components into a clinical science. Rather than developing independently and being left to stand as largely unconnected functions, Millon argues that a truly mature clinical science will embody explicit: 1) theories, that is, explanatory and heuristic conceptual schemes that enable the development of a formal 2) nosology, a taxonomic classification of disorders that is devised logically from the theory and which permits the development of coordinated 3) instruments, tools that are empirically grounded and sufficiently sensitive quantitatively to enable the theory's hypothesis to be adequately investigated, and from which target areas can be specified for 4) interventions, strategies and tactics of therapy designed in accord with the theory.
