It is often argued that the egocentric perspective is the default perspectivein natural language use. However, there are many factors that influence whichperspective a person takes. In this dissertation I look at various environmental, biological, social, and linguistic cues that point toward another hypothesis forconsideration than just the default perspective of egocentricism. It is probablethat there is a bias toward the egocentric perspective given we are constrained toa body which provides us with many more experiences of an egocentricperspective but we are able to take other perspectives with relative ease andfrequency. These occurrences of an other-centric perspective suggest a gradedspatial attraction toward competing perspectives that result in a continuous, rather than a stage-based, account of perspective taking and encourage a moreall-inclusive theoretical framework for taking a perspective.

Previous research has shown that infants in their first year of life have primitive perspective-taking skills: they can consider an agent's incomplete perception when making sense of her action in terms of goals and preferences. However, it is unclear whether infants are able to use their perspective-taking and language comprehension abilities, especially article understanding, to make sense of social interactions. The present research thus examined whether Korean 14-month-olds and American 14-and 18-month-olds understand an agent's intention through her speech and predict the listener's reaction accordingly. In the research, infants saw two identical balls on the stage but one ball was occluded from an agent (Agent1) by an opaque screen. The other agent (Agent2) could see both balls as the infants did. If Agent1 requested 'ball' in Korean which does not contain an article system, Korean 14-month-old infants showed heightened interest when Agent2 grasped the ball hidden from Agent1 (Experiment 1). However, if Agent1 requested 'the ball' in English which has two articles, American 18-month-old infants (Experiment 2) but not 14-month-old infants (Experiment 3) responded with prolonged looking when Agent2 grabbed the hidden ball, suggesting that they seemed to understand that Agent1 requested the ball she could see. When Agent1 asked for 'a ball,' however, American 18-month-old infants responded differently (Experiment 2). Therefore, infants are not only able to use their perspective-taking skills but also language comprehension abilities, sensitivities to articles in this case, to understand two agents' interaction.

It's impossible to know exactly what other people are thinking, but if a person has perspective, it can be much easier to have an idea of those thoughts. This volume introduces students to the idea of perspective-taking, or seeing things from another person's point of view. Students will learn that perspective-taking can help them build better relationships with friends and family. They will be better able to resolve conflicts if they're thinking about the other person's thoughts and feelings. They'll develop more empathy for people who have different experiences. This book shows students that through perspective-taking, they'll begin to better understand and accept people who are different from themselves.

Research about translation as a learning tool and how it can help learners become aware and adjust to the perspective encoded in a second language is lacking in the literature. This study investigated whether translation helps learners acquire the perspective (different ways of seeing the world) encoded in a second language and thus communicate more effectively. Writings of native and non-native speakers were compared by means of an ANOVA test to see how they differed among each other before and after practice on how to write descriptions. In order to operationalize the concept of perspective and allow for assessment of the value of translation as a learning technique, the descriptions were analyzed with respect to information organization at the clause level in accordance with thematic structure as proposed by functional grammarians. Two groups of non-native speakers practiced how to write descriptions. The control group practiced writing descriptions by means of techniques currently used in second language teaching, while the experimental group's practice was based on translation assignments. The study demonstrated that the experimental group proved to adjust to native-like ways of writing descriptions and thus to the perspective encoded in the second language, while the control group stayed basically the same. In addition, surveys were carried out to investigate learners' opinions about the use of translation in the second language classroom. The results show that, generally speaking, learners have a positive view on the use of translation as a learning tool in the second language classroom.

[Truncated abstract] Theory of mind (ToM) is a type of cognitive perspective taking which involves the ability to attribute mental states in order to explain and predict behaviour (Premack & Woodruff, 1978). The causal factors involved in the development of ToM have been the subject of vast amounts of theorizing and research. However, a focus on the development of children s belief and desire reasoning over the last 30 years has meant that the development of children s visual perspective taking (VPT) and emotional perspective taking skills received less attention over this period. Similarly, little attention has been paid to the relationships among the development of ToM, VPT, and emotional perspective taking skills, with resultant constraints on theorizing and research into the factors involved in the development of these skills. Although an increasing amount of empirical evidence has highlighted the importance of language and social interaction in the development of children s perspective taking skills, few theories or research projects have adequately attempted to delineate the complex and dynamic nature of the developmental relationships among these variables. Thus, the aim of the current longitudinal research project was to investigate the relationships among parenting, socio-emotional engagement, shared practices, language (sentential complements, conversation skill), cognitive flexibility, and perspective taking (cognitive, visual, emotional) in typically developing children and children with specific language impairment (SLI). This was achieved by testing hypotheses drawn from various constructivist theories (e.g., Racine & Carpendale, 2007; Vygotsky, 1930/1981) and, where possible, by contrasting these with predictions drawn from the dominant modular (e.g., Baron-Cohen, 1995), theory-theory (e.g., Gopnik, 1996), and simulation (e.g., Harris, 1996) theories. The first empirical chapter reports the validation of a measure of children s conversation skill suitable for use in research investigating the relationship between conversation skill and perspective taking skill. A 7-item parent report measure of children s conversation skill was piloted with a sample of 95 typically developing English speaking children (M age = 64.2 months) and found to have good reliability. The validity of this measure was then demonstrated with the data from the first year of the main longitudinal research project using a different sample of 92 typically developing children (M age = 61.3 months) and 30 children with SLI (M age = 63.0 months). The second empirical chapter reports subsequent analyses with the data from these same samples that investigated the factors involved in the development of children s conversation skills. Drawing on Racine and Carpendale s (2007) constructivist theory it was predicted that joint attention and imitation would mediate the relationship between socio-emotional engagement and conversation skill. Results for all three groups of children converge in supporting this hypothesis. The results of analyses regarding the relationships among maternal language input and child sentential complements skill, cognitive flexibility, and false belief understanding using the concurrent and longitudinal (one year later) data from the main longitudinal research project are reported in the third empirical chapter...
