Human language is the most powerful communication system that evolution has produced. Within this system, we can talk about things we can physically see, such as cats and tables, but also about more abstract entities, such as theories and feelings. But how are these abstract concepts grounded in human cognition and represented in the mind? How are they constructed in language? And how are they used in natural communication settings? This book addresses these questions through a collection of studies that relate to various theoretical frameworks, ranging from Conceptual Metaphor Theory to Words as Social Tools. Contributors investigate how abstract concepts are grounded in the mind, represented in language, and used in verbal discourse. This richness is matched by a range of methods used throughout the volume, from neuroimaging to computational modeling, and from behavioral experiments to corpus analyses.

Conceptual change, how conceptual understanding is transformed, has been investigated extensively since the 1970s. The field has now grown into a multifaceted, interdisciplinary effort with strands of research in cognitive and developmental psychology, education, educational psychology, and the learning sciences. Converging Perspectives on Conceptual Change brings together an extensive team of expert contributors from around the world, and offers a unique examination of how distinct lines of inquiry can complement each other and have converged over time. Amin and Levrini adopt a new approach to assembling the diverse research on conceptual change: the combination of short position pieces with extended synthesis chapters within each section, as well as an overall synthesis chapter at the end of the volume, provide a coherent and comprehensive perspective on conceptual change research. Arranged over five parts, the book covers a number of topics including: the nature of concepts and conceptual change representation, language, and discourse in conceptual change modeling, explanation, and argumentation in conceptual change metacognition and epistemology in conceptual change identity and conceptual change. Throughout this wide-ranging volume, the editors present researchers and practitioners with a more internally consistent picture of conceptual change by exploring convergence and complementarity across perspectives. By mapping features of an emerging paradigm, they challenge newcomers and established scholars alike to embrace a more programmatic orientation towards conceptual change.

Perspectives On Thinking Learning And Cognitive Styles written by Robert J. Sternberg and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-04-08 with Education categories.
This volume presents the most comprehensive, balanced, and up-to-date coverage of theory and research on cognitive, thinking, and learning styles, in a way that: * represents diverse theoretical perspectives; * includes solid empirical evidence testing the validity of these perspectives; and * shows the application of these perspectives to school situations, as well as situations involving other kinds of organizations. International representation is emphasized, with chapters from almost every major leader in the field of styles. Each chapter author has contributed serious theory and/or published empirical data--work that is primarily commercial or that implements the theories of others. The book's central premise is that cognitive, learning, and thinking styles are not abilities but rather preferences in the use of abilities. Traditionally, many psychologists and educators have believed that people's successes and failures are attributable mainly to individual differences in abilities. However, for the past few decades research on the roles of thinking, learning, and cognitive styles in performance within both academic and nonacademic settings has indicated that they account for individual differences in performance that go well beyond abilities. New theories better differentiate styles from abilities and make more contact with other psychological literatures; recent research, in many cases, is more careful and conclusive than are some of the older studies. Cognitive, learning, and thinking styles are of interest to educators because they predict academic performance in ways that go beyond abilities, and because taking styles into account can help teachers to improve both instruction and assessment and to show sensitivity to cultural and individual diversity among learners. They are also of interest in business, where instruments to assess styles are valuable in selecting and placing personnel. The state-of-the-art research and theory in this volume will be of particular interest to scholars and graduate students in cognitive and educational psychology, managers, and others concerned with intellectual styles as applied in educational, industrial, and corporate settings.

Violence in its myriad forms remains a persistent and devastating challenge for individuals, communities and societies worldwide. To unravel the complexity of violence, it is necessary to distinguish between the individual act and the broader context of aggression at the community level, each of which requires different perspectives and approaches. While recognising the interconnectedness of these forms, we will make a clear distinction between individual violence, rooted in psychological factors and personal experience, and community violence, fuelled by societal inequalities, structural issues and cultural dynamics. We seek to explore in depth the psychological roots of individual violence, including mental illness, anger management issues and the significant role of substance abuse in triggering or escalating violent behaviour. We analyse specific examples, delving into the motivations behind acts of aggression to illuminate the complex interplay of factors that contribute to such behaviour. We then broaden our scope to examine the societal factors that give rise to community violence, including social inequalities, economic hardship, gang activity and the influence of cultural and ideological differences. The analysis will include a deep dive into the complex dynamics of gang violence and disputes, highlighting the impact of community disorganisation. The discussion will also extend to the profound consequences of violence at both individual and societal levels, examining the long-term physical and psychological effects on victims, the economic costs, and the erosion of trust and social cohesion within communities. We will outline comprehensive strategies for violence prevention and intervention, emphasising the need for multi-stakeholder collaboration and highlighting the effectiveness of community-based initiatives, educational programmes and policy recommendations. Ultimately, we hope to contribute to a more informed and effective approach to reducing violence and building safer, more peaceful communities for all.
