Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people ages 18-24. What is not always captured by this statistic is the strong emotional impact that suicide has on young people who are losing peers, friends, partners, and siblings to suicide and mental health issues. We are in a mental health crisis. There needs to be a change in the way we approach suicide and mental health, particularly on college campuses. But where do we start? I'm Fine: A Student Perspective on Suicide and Mental Health on College Campuses takes an in-depth look into what schools can be doing right now to positively impact the well-being of their students. In this book, Emily Kumpf shares perspectives, including her own personal mental health battles as well as detailed research and insights from nearly 20 leaders across the country who dedicate their lives to preventing suicide and promoting mental health. At its core, I'm Fine helps to decrease stigma, break stereotypes, provide psycho education, and increase conversations around mental health, enabling students to answer the question "How are you doing?" with more than a cursory "I'm Fine." Kumpf provides a framework and solutions to suicide prevention and improved student mental health that university leaders can incorporate on their campuses. This book can change your life, the life of a loved one, and the lives of college students across the world.

Perspectives on a Young Woman's Suicide is a unique and updated analysis of a diary left behind by "Katie," a young woman who took her own life. By drawing on clinicians, researchers, survivors of suicide loss, and those closest to Katie, this book delves into common beliefs about why people die by suicide and into the internal worlds of those who do, as well as ethical and moral questions surrounding those deaths. Several contributors discuss Katie’s suicide from the perspective of recent theories of suicide, including Joiner’s interpersonal theory and Klonsky’s three-step theory. Two contributors who have lost a child to suicide look at Katie’s diary from their perspective, one of whom discusses whether it is truly possible to prevent suicide. Finally, Katie’s sister reveals her reactions to this project and her ex-boyfriend shares his account of her death. This book is a vital addition to the library of any researcher, academic, or professional interested in suicide and suicide prevention.

Globally, suicide is one of the leading causes of death. Figures released by World Health Organization (2017) show 800 000 deaths by suicide every year and an estimated twenty or more suicide attempts for each suicide. In Australia, suicide accounted for 1.8% of all deaths and contributed 10.5% of total years of potential life lost in 2016 (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2016). In many parts of the world, including Australia and Hong Kong, suicide is the leading cause of death among individuals aged from 15 to 24 (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2018; Committee on Prevention of Student Suicides, 2016; World Health Organization, 2017). Recently, the suicide rate of youth in Hong Kong has further increased (Committee on Prevention of Student Suicides, 2016), with suicide claiming two times more lives in 2016, compared with 2015. Given these findings, youth suicide has become a priority public health issue, making suicide and related behaviors one of the most important research priorities (World Health Organization, 2014).

Research indicates that rather than an isolated incident experienced by only a few college students, bereavement is a life transition or crisis faced by a significant share of the campus population at any given time. Death loss experiences and subsequent grief reactions have the strong potential to affect the functioning and overall development of bereaved students. This sourcebook brings together perspectives from the fields of higher education and thanatology (the study of death and dying) to provide a mix of theoretical, research, and practice perspectives for coping with death and bereavement on campus. The initial chapters move from a macro-level focus on the prevalence of bereaverment on campus to theoretical and empirical approaches for understanding how students cope with death and then to practical approaches for supporting and assisting bereaved students. The volume then explores administrative responses to death, including issues of suicide, death notification, and practical guidance in the aftermath of student death. Death is a fact of life college students, whether they are traditional-age or adult learners, undergraduates or graduate students, full-time or part-time students, or on-campus residents or commuters. Members of the higher education community need to be ready to respond when death touches the lives of students to provide support and assistance. Of course, institutions have unique characteristics, and the composition of student populations differs widely. The materials and guidelines presented in this volume should be considered in light of these contextual factors. With this in mind, the editors have created a sourcebook that provides useful guidance for a caring response. Chapters include Grieving: 22 to 30 Percent of All College Students Developmental and Contextual Perspectives on Bereaved College Students Lessons of Loss: Meaning-Making in Bereaved College Students Designing and Conducting Grief Workshops for College Students Training Faculty Members and Resident Assistants to Respond to Bereaved Students Suicide and Its Impact on Campus Guidelines for Death Notification in College Student Populations Student Death Protocols: A Practitioner's Perspective This is the 121st volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Student Services, offering guidelines and programs for aiding students in their total development: emotional, social, physical, and intellectual.
