Wichtiger Bestandteil der Persuasion war schon seit jeher die Rhetorik, begrifflich geprägt durch Platons Definition, dass die Rhetorik „Das Gewinnen des menschlichen Geistes durch Worte“ sei. Doch das Verständnis von Persuasion setzt nicht nur den Begriff der Rhetorik voraus, sondern impliziert auch, dass man einen Blick auf das konträre Paar Macht und Einfluss wirft. Denn will man sich mit der Basis der Medienwirkungs- und Publikumsforschung auseinandersetzen, kommt man nicht umhin, Macht als Persuasion beziehungsweise (bzw.) Einfluss zu betrachten, ohne jedoch den Fehler zu begehen, Persuasion als Macht zu verstehen. Zudem wird die Persuasion als Knoten in einem oder mehreren Kommunikationssystemen oder auch Kommunikationsnetzwerken betrachtet, wobei hier zunächst die Begriffe offene und geschlossene Kommunikation geklärt werden. In den folgenden Ausführungen wird außerdem näher auf die zwei Wege des Überzeugens eingegangen, um die verschiedenen Informationsverarbeitungen der Rezipienten zu erklären. Diesbezüglich wird auch der Begriff des Elaboration-Likelihood-Models näher erläutert, das die zentrale und periphere Route der Persuasion, also die direkte, bewusste und indirekte, auch unbewusste Informationsverarbeitung beinhaltet.
