This book explores the multi-sensorial world of wine-tasting language, with a specific focus on communicative dynamics between winemakers and ordinary consumers in the context of online commerce. Promotional tasting notes of labelled wines from Campania—a Southern Italian region famous worldwide for its unique wine tradition—in their Italian and English version, are analysed to pursue the twofold aim of identifying the most common knowledge domains from which wine professionals draw new words from, and assessing the degree of terminological harmonisation between these descriptions and national/international terminological standards. Translation strategies put into use to promote Italian wines to the wider English-speaking audience are also discussed. The book provides a snapshot of wine language and is addressed to linguists and other academics, as well as members of the wine community and ordinary wine drinkers.

Wineinformatics is a new data science application with a focus on understanding wine through artificial intelligence. Thousands of new wine reviews are produced monthly, which benefits the understanding of wine through wine experts for winemakers and consumers. This book systematically investigates how to process human language format reviews and mine useful knowledge from a large volume of processed data. This book presents a human language processing tool named Computational Wine Wheel to process professional wine reviews and three novel Wineinformatics studies to analyze wine quality, price and reviewers. Through the lens of data science, the author demonstrates how the wine receives 90+ scores out of 100 points from Wine Spectator, how to predict a wine’s specific grade and price through wine reviews and how to rank a group of wine reviewers. The book also shows the advanced application of the Computational Wine Wheel to capture more information hidden in wine reviews and the possibility of extending the wheel to coffee, tea beer, sake and liquors. This book targets computer scientists, data scientists and wine industrial researchers, who are interested in Wineinformatics. Senior data science undergraduate and graduate students may also benefit from this book.

The growing shift in Catholic moral theology from reflecting on rules alone to focusing on the identity and formation of persons as moral agents prompts a further question: What impact do recent changes in the identity and formation of Catholic moral theologians themselves have on how that discipline is practiced? Young Catholic moral theologians experience a sharply different professional formation and a changed location of ongoing professional life than prior generations of moral theologians. How do these differences influence the field of moral theology as a whole? New Wine, New Wineskins: A Next Generation Reflects on Key Issues in Catholic Moral Theology addresses these questions and more by offering a snapshot of how a new generation of Catholic moral theologians understands not only topics in the field, but the effects of their own identity and formation on their treatment of those topics. The distinctive contribution of this volume is the interweaving of three key concerns, all of which arise out of a critical self-reflection on the task of moral theology today: the character and adequacy of training and ongoing formation in the field of Catholic moral theology, the purpose and nature of teaching Catholic moral theology, and the fittingness of methodological debates with regard to the needs of the Christian life. Each essay makes a contribution to its specific area of interest-ranging from economic ethics, to Patristic rhetoric, to the nature and development of practical reasoning-while probing what exactly young Catholic moral theologians are doing, and how they can do what they do better.

Mixing metaphors in speech, writing, and even gesture, is traditionally viewed as a sign of inconsistency in thought and language. Despite the prominence of mixed metaphors, there have been surprisingly few attempts to comprehensively explain why people mix their metaphors so frequently and in the particular ways they do. This volume brings together a distinguished group of linguists, psychologists and computer scientists, who tackle the issue of how and why mixed metaphors arise and what communicative purposes they may serve. These scholars, almost unanimously, argue that mixing metaphors is a natural consequence of common metaphorical thought processes, highlighting important complexities of the metaphorical mind. Mixing Metaphor, for the first time, offers new, critical empirical and theoretical insights on a topic that has long been ignored within interdisciplinary metaphor studies.

This book contributes to growing debates on transcreation, applying an appraisal framework to texts from luxury brands in Chinese and English to reveal new insights into marketing transcreation and set out transcreation as an area of study in its own right. The volume charts the origins of the term "transcreation", emerging from the interplay of established concepts of translation, creation, localisation, and adaptation and ongoing debates on what should be transcreated and how. Using these dialogues as a point of departure, Ho outlines a way forward for transcreation research by advocating for the use of an appraisal framework, taken from work in systemic functional linguistics and employed to evaluate persuasion in language. In focusing on marketing texts from the websites of three luxury brands in English and Chinese, the book explores how this approach can surface fresh perspectives on the different ways in which the processes and practices of marketing transcreation are used to generate persuasion across languages. The volume looks ahead to the implications for other language pairs and the applications of the appraisal framework to understand transcreation practice of other genres, such as literary texts. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in translation studies and marketing studies.

This book approaches persuasion in public discourse as a rhetorical phenomenon that enables the persuader to appeal to the addressee’s intellectual and emotional capacities in a competing public environment. The aim is to investigate persuasive strategies from the overlapping perspectives of cognitive and functional linguistics. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses of authentic data (including English, Czech, Spanish, Slovene, Russian, and Hungarian) are grounded in the frameworks of functional grammar, facework and rapport management, classical rhetoric studies and multimodal discourse analysis and are linked to the constructs of (re)framing, conceptual metaphor and blending, mental space and viewpoint. In addition to traditional genres such as political speeches, news reporting, and advertising, the book also studies texts that examine book reviews, medieval medical recipes, public complaints or anonymous viral videos. Apart from discourse analysts, pragmaticians and cognitive linguists, this book will appeal to cognitive musicologists, semioticians, historical linguists and scholars of related disciplines.
