Prof. Newman is considered one of the great chemical engineers of his time. His reputation derives from his mastery of all phases of the subject matter, his clarity of thought, and his ability to reduce complex problems to their essential core elements. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, Washington, DC, USA, and has won numerous national awards including every award offered by the Electrochemical Society, USA. His motto, as known by his colleagues, is "do it right the first time." He has been teaching undergraduate and graduate core subject courses at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), USA, since joining the faculty in 1966. His method is to write out, in long form, everything he expects to convey to his class on a subject on any given day. He has maintained and updated his lecture notes from notepad to computer throughout his career. This book is an exact reproduction of those notes. This book demonstrates how to solve the classic problems of fluid mechanics, starting with the Navier–Stokes equation. It explains when it is appropriate to simplify a problem by neglecting certain terms through proper dimensional analysis. It covers concepts such as microscopic interpretation of fluxes, multicomponent diffusion, entropy production, nonnewtonian fluids, natural convection, turbulent flow, and hydrodynamic stability. It amply arms any serious problem solver with the tools to address any problem.

Perturbations: Theory and Methods gives a thorough introduction to both regular and singular perturbation methods for algebraic and differential equations. Unlike most introductory books on the subject, this one distinguishes between formal and rigorous asymptotic validity, which are commonly confused in books that treat perturbation theory as a bag of heuristic tricks with no foundation. The meaning of "uniformity" is carefully explained in a variety of contexts. All standard methods, such as rescaling, multiple scales, averaging, matching, and the WKB method are covered, and the asymptotic validity (in the rigorous sense) of each method is carefully proved. First published in 1991, this book is still useful today because it is an introduction. It combines perturbation results with those known through other methods. Sometimes a geometrical result (such as the existence of a periodic solution) is rigorously deduced from a perturbation result, and at other times a knowledge of the geometry of the solutions is used to aid in the selection of an effective perturbation method. Dr. Murdock's approach differs from other introductory texts because he attempts to present perturbation theory as a natural part of a larger whole, the mathematical theory of differential equations. He explores the meaning of the results and their connections to other ways of studying the same problems.

Singular Perturbation Theory written by Lindsay A. Skinner and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-05-11 with Mathematics categories.

This book is a rigorous presentation of the method of matched asymptotic expansions, the primary tool for attacking singular perturbation problems. A knowledge of conventional asymptotic analysis is assumed. The first chapter introduces the theory and is followed by four chapters of applications to ordinary differential equation problems of increasing complexity. Exercises are included as well as several Maple programs for computing the terms of the various asymptotic expansions that arise in solving the problems.

Fluid Mechanics and Singular Perturbations: A Collection of Papers by Saul Kaplun focuses on the works and contributions of Saul Kaplun to the studies of fluid mechanics and singular perturbations. The book first discusses the role of coordinate system in boundary-layer theory. Boundary-layer approximations as limits of exact solutions; comparison of different boundary-layer solutions; and comparison with exact solution and choice of optimal are discussed. The text also looks at asymptotic experiment of Navier-Stokes solution for small Reynolds numbers; basic concepts in the theory of singular perturbations and their applications to flow at small Reynolds numbers; and low Reynolds number flow. The book discusses as well a generalization of Poiseuille and Couette flows and nature of solutions of the boundary-layer equations. Numerical solutions and analyses are presented. The text also looks at compatibility condition for boundary layer equation at a point of zero skin friction. Intuitive background; the past-like solution and its principal asymptotic expansions; and class of compatible profiles are discussed. The book is a valuable source of information for readers who want to study fluid mechanics.

Historical Developments In Singular Perturbations written by Robert E. O'Malley and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-11-19 with Mathematics categories.

This engaging text describes the development of singular perturbations, including its history, accumulating literature, and its current status. While the approach of the text is sophisticated, the literature is accessible to a broad audience. A particularly valuable bonus are the historical remarks. These remarks are found throughout the manuscript. They demonstrate the growth of mathematical thinking on this topic by engineers and mathematicians. The book focuses on detailing how the various methods are to be applied. These are illustrated by a number and variety of examples. Readers are expected to have a working knowledge of elementary ordinary differential equations, including some familiarity with power series techniques, and of some advanced calculus. Dr. O'Malley has written a number of books on singular perturbations. This book has developed from many of his works in the field of perturbation theory.

Mathematical Theory of Compressible Fluid Flow covers the conceptual and mathematical aspects of theory of compressible fluid flow. This five-chapter book specifically tackles the role of thermodynamics in the mechanics of compressible fluids. This text begins with a discussion on the general theory of characteristics of compressible fluid with its application. This topic is followed by a presentation of equations delineating the role of thermodynamics in compressible fluid mechanics. The discussion then shifts to the theory of shocks as asymptotic phenomena, which is set within the context of rational mechanics. The remaining two chapters is a thorough description of the hodograph method. These chapters provide a comparison of the modern integration theories. The features, characteristics, and application of transonic flow are also explored. This book is an ideal advanced textbook for both graduate students and research workers.
