This book provides a comprehensive overview of pertussis - also known as whooping cough. The first part discusses the evolution the genus Bordetellae and the molecular epidemiology of B. pertussis, while the following chapters focus on the role of B. pertussis virulence factors in infection and disease and on the mechanisms of the immune response to infection and vaccination. The book also explores the prevention and control of the disease as well as its clinical management, with the finally section addressing vaccination, from improved immunization strategies to novel vaccines. Pertussis remains one of the most poorly controlled vaccine-preventable diseases around the globe. Universal vaccination has dramatically reduced its incidence but has failed to bring it completely under control. In recent decades, changes in pertussis epidemiology have been noted, likely related to the use of acellular pertussis vaccines, which in many countries have replaced older-generation, whole-cell pertussis vaccines. Several years after their introduction, it is becoming apparent that immunity conferred by acellular vaccines wanes more rapidly than expected. Unlike whole-cell vaccines, acellular vaccines, while protecting against the disease, do not seem to prevent colonization and transmission. Increasing incidence among adolescents and adults makes them a reservoir for transmission to unimmunized infants, who in turn are at risk of severe disease and death. This book is a valuable resource for researchers and clinicians in the field of medical microbiology, vaccine research and infectious diseases.

Pertussis, or whooping cough, is a respiratory disease caused primarily by infection with the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. It remains among the leading causes of death amongst vaccine-preventable diseases worldwide and recent years have seen its alarming re-emergence in many regions (including the U.S. and much of Europe), despite sustained high levels of vaccine coverage. The causes of the resurgence remain contentious, in part due to inherent complexities of the pathogen's biology, in part due to pronounced variation in the treatment and prevention strategies between different countries and regions, and in part due to long-standing disagreement amongst scientific researchers studying pertussis. This edited volume brings together expert knowledge from disparate fields with the overall aim of synthesizing the current understanding of this critically important, global pathogen.

Parents have come to depend on vaccines to protect their children from a variety of diseases. Some evidence suggests, however, that vaccination against pertussis (whooping cough) and rubella (German measles) is, in a small number of cases, associated with increased risk of serious illness. This book examines the controversy over the evidence and offers a comprehensively documented assessment of the risk of illness following immunization with vaccines against pertussis and rubella. Based on extensive review of the evidence from epidemiologic studies, case histories, studies in animals, and other sources of information, the book examines: The relation of pertussis vaccines to a number of serious adverse events, including encephalopathy and other central nervous system disorders, sudden infant death syndrome, autism, Guillain-Barre syndrome, learning disabilities, and Reye syndrome. The relation of rubella vaccines to arthritis, various neuropathies, and thrombocytopenic purpura. The volume, which includes a description of the committee's methods for evaluating evidence and directions for future research, will be important reading for public health officials, pediatricians, researchers, and concerned parents.

Pertussis Toxin presents the proceeding of the Pertussis Toxin Conference, held in Bethesda, Maryland, on September 20–21, 1984. This book discusses the perspective of the pertussis toxin and the potential role of the toxin in the development of new acellular pertussis vaccines. Organized into 13 chapters, this text begins with an overview of the biological activities of pertussis vaccine, which enhanced the production of antibodies to antigens. This book then examines the interesting action of pertussis vaccine to stimulate antibody production, particularly as an effective adjuvant for the production of IgE isotype of antibodies. Other chapters consider the experimental approaches used in the study of the mechanisms by which hormones produce their physiological effect. The final chapter examines the several features of the Bordetella adenylate cyclase toxin, which suggest that the molecule may follow the A/B model proposed for a number of bacterial toxins. This book is a valuable resource for toxicologists, immunologists, bacteriologists, and pharmacologists.

Whooping cough, also called pertussis, is a highly contagious disease caused by the Bordetella pertussis bacterium. Characterized by severe coughing fits, whooping cough can lead to pneumonia, convulsions, encephalopathy, and, in rare cases, death. Since most infections occur in unvaccinated infants and children, vaccination is recommended for this highly contagious disease for infants starting at 2 months of age, with booster shots throughout childhood.
