The study assesses the main issues in the current debate about the early history of Pesach and Easter and provides new insights into the development of these two festivals. The author argues that the prescriptions of Exodus 12 provide the celebration of the Pesach in Jerusalem with an etiological background in order to connect the pilgrim festival with the story of the Exodus. The thesis that the Christian Easter evolved as a festival against a Jewish form of celebrating Pesach in the second century and that the development of Easter Sunday is dependent upon this custom is endorsed by the author’s close study of relevant texts such as the Haggada of Pesach; the “Poem of the four nights” in the Palestinian Targum Tradition; the structure of the Easter vigil.

Of all the Jewish holidays, Pesach ranks as the most popular. But Pesach is more than matzah. The purpose of this unique book is to encourage an enriched, text-based understanding of why we do what we do, when we do it. Passage to Pesach is divided into three parts. The first part provides a historical survey of Pesach. The second section focuses on the five special Shabbatot that lead to the seder, with their additional Torah and haftarah readings. After a look at the development of the Haggadah, the third section examines the seder itself through the themes of the cups of wine associated with the seder meal. Pesach is a holiday that defines Jews as individuals as well as a people. This book will help you discover your own place in the rich Pesach tradition by reflecting on the countless memories and applications afforded by Jewish tradition. Passage to Pesach provides a way to prepare for Passover on a spiritual and intellectual level, by discerning new layers of meaning in the sacred texts and symbols connected to the holiday. Reading this book will help you expand the meaning of Pesach from a one-week holiday during which we abstain from bread into a seven-week journey culminating in our seminal covenant with God. [from Chief Rabbi Professor Jonathan Sacks] Rabbi Cohen writes within a great tradition, bringing together Torah and chokmah, Jewish wisdom and the broad panoply of human knowledge, and finding in their interplay a never-ending source of deepened understanding. He is both sage and man of faith, a lucid teacher and a source of inspiration, and no one will read this work without discovering that the festival they thought they knew so well has a depth and history that are enthralling. --- [from The Jewish Week] .encyclopedic in breadth, features queries that lead the reader through preparation for the holiday, its historical background, symbolism of the seder ritual, commentary on the Haggadah, special festival services in synagogue, and Pesach customs from around the world. As Rabbi Cohen, the author of several books who leads the largest Orthodox congregation in Great Britain believes , "Questions are of the very essence of the spirit of this festival.
