Pesantren merupakan basis kekuatan budaya yang terintegritas dengan masyarakat, maka peluang untuk melakukan pengembangan ekonomi menjadi sangat luas dan terbuka lebar. Pengembangan ekonomi yang dilakukan akan memiliki impact yang langsung dapat dirasakan oleh pesantren dari segi ekonomi dan sosial. Potensi yang terdapat dalam pesantren menjadikannya modal sosial yang fundamental dalam sebuah aktivitas perekonomian. Pesantren bisa dijadikan sebagai pusat aktivitas ekonomi dan bisnis masyarakat. Wilayah yang berdekatan dengan pondok pesantren umumnya memiliki pergerakan ekonomi yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan wilayah yang berjauhan dengan pondok pesantren. Pesantren yang bisa mengembangkan unit usaha dan jaringan bisnis, maka secara otomatis pesantren tersebut akan memiliki sumber pendapatan dan pada gilirannya pesantren dapat berperan sebagai agen pembangunan dalam masyarakat. Aceh merupakan wilayah yang menerapkan syari’at Islam dan juga ada ribuan dayah/pesantren yang tersebar, tentu menjadi penting untuk melakukan kajian “Pengembangan Usaha Dayah/Pesantren” yang ada di Provinsi Aceh”. Di Aceh, pesantren disebut dengan istilah dayah. Dayah dianggap sama dengan pesantren di Jawa, sama-sama mempunyai fungsi sebagai instansi atau lembaga pendidikan Islam, namun memiliki latar belakang sejarah yang berbeda. Dayah adalah lembaga pendidikan Islam tertua di Aceh, yaitu sejak kedatangan Islam itu sendiri. Kemudian dibangun lembaga pendidikan agama Islam seperti Surau di Padang dan Pesantren di Jawa yang sebahagiannya didirikan oleh orang-orang yang sudah pernah belajar di dayah Aceh. Jadi, sebenarnya lembaga Pendidikan Islam tertua di nusantara adalah dayah di Aceh Pemetaan berbagai hal yang berkenaan dengan usaha dayah di Aceh khususnya yang berkaitan dengan faktor internal serta eksternal yang dapat memberikan pengaruh terhadap suksesnya usaha di dayah, dengan basis riset lietarur dan wancara dengan berbagai pihak yang berkompeten, diharapkan dapat memberikan sebuah rumusan strategi dan model pengembangan usaha dayah/pesantren yang prospektif dan dapat diaplikasikan tidak hanya di Aceh, tetapi juga di seluruh pesantren di Indonesia. Pesantren dan dinamika pendidikan di dalamnya sudah sering sering dibahas dalam berbagai tulisan, namun melalui buku ini penulis mencoba mengambil sisi lain dari pesantren, bagaimana pesantren mencoba untuk mandiri secara ekonomi melalui pengembangan unit-unit usaha yang dijalankan. Buku ini layak menjadi menjadi referensi khusunya bagi pegiat usaha di pesantren.
