Charlotte Smith (1749-1806) was the author of ten novels, a play, and a host of innovative educational books for children, as well as several volumes of poetry that helped set priorities and determine the tastes of the culture of early Romanticism. Her Elegiac Sonnets sparked the sonnet revival in English Romanticism; The Emigrants initiated its passion for lengthy meditative introspection; and Beachy Head lent its poetic engagement with nature a uniquely telling immediacy. Smith was a woman, Wordsworth remarked a quarter century after her death, "to whom English verse is under greater obligations than are likely to be either acknowledged or remembered." True to his prediction, Smith's poetry has virtually dropped from sight and thus from cultural consciousness. This, the first edition of Smith's collected poems, will restore to all students of English poetry a distinctive, compelling voice. Likewise, the recovery of Smith to her rightful place among the Romantic poets must spur the reassessment of the place of women writers within that culture.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge, poet, philosopher and critic, a founder of British Romanticism, wrote with William Wordsworth the Lyrical Ballads (1798), which included his great poem 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'. It was this work which was first to carry his reputation across Europe in many translations and through the rich illustrations by Gustave Doré. His poetry was received as late Romantic, visionary and symbolist, in later phases of European reception; he was known too as the translator of Schiller. His prose was known mainly in selections: chapters of his literary life Biographia Literaria; elements of his Shakespeare lectures; and other literary, political, philosophical and religious lectures, essays, and aphorisms, especially his brilliant Table Talk. In the last fifty years the Notebooks and Letters, and the recent Collected Works, have added to his stature at home and abroad. This collection of essays by an international team of scholars, critics and translators, records how Coleridge's works have been received, translated and interpreted across Europe from his own time to today, and will contribute to the new recognition of one of the greatest of English poets, critics and cultural thinkers.

Drawing on a long-standing tradition of fictional images, British writers of the Romantic period defined and constructed Italy as a land that naturally invites inscription and description. In their works, Italy is a cultural geography so heavily overwritten with discourse that it becomes the natural recipient of further fictional transformations. If critics have frequently attended to this figurative complex and its related Italophilia, what seems to have been left relatively unexplored is the fact that these representations were paralleled and sustained by intense scholarly activities. This volume specifically addresses Romantic-period scholarship about Italian literature, history, and culture under the interconnected rubrics of ‘translating’, ‘reviewing’, and ‘rewriting’. The essays in this book consider this rich field of scholarly activity in order to redraw its contours and examine its connections with the fictional images of Italy and the general fascination with this land and its civilization that are a crucial component of British culture between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
