Second Peter is full of christological language. Scholars have often overlooked the christological richness as they have focused heavily on the issues of eschatology and authorship. The uniqueness of the Son from the Father as well as the divinity of Jesus are at the forefront of the short epistle. Further, Ernst Käsemann famously criticized 2 Peter for being void of Christology and the cross, and thus the gospel. The author analyzes the Christology of 2 Peter, particularly as it relates to the Petrine view of the divinity of Jesus and the distinctness and uniqueness of the Son from the Father. This study examines the christological depth in these key areas as a response to critics like Käsemann. Käsemann first looked into the eschatological arguments of 2 Peter and claimed he was not able to find any christological orientation. The student of 2 Peter must not look through eschatology to see the rich Christology which fills the verses of the epistle. However, when the reader examines the christological language and themes within 2 Peter, he/she is faced with a beautiful portrayal of Jesus and the Father.

This book critically examines all the early and important Petrine pseudepigrapha to identify a distinctive Petrine theology which, it is believed, was later swamped by the tide of western orthodoxy. Despite the diversity of the books and tractates, ranging from Jewish-Christian writings to avowedly Gnostic works, a remarkably consistent Petrine tradition does emerge; and Peter is shown essentially to be neither the impetuous, undiscerning, and even vacillating figure portrayed in the Gospels and Acts, nor the magisterial and pontifical figure of later Church tradition, but a visionary who was concerned above all to hold together both the moral and cognitive aspects of the Faith.

Peter stands at the beginning of Christian theology. Christianity's central confessions regarding the person of Jesus, the cross, salvation, the inclusive nature of the people of God, and the end of all things come to us through the apostle who was not only the church's leader but also its first theologian. Peter is the apostle for the whole church and the whole church resonates with his theology. We sing his song, though we may not have glanced at the bottom of the page in the hymnbook to see who wrote the words and composed the tune. Peter is the "lost boy" of Christian theology, a person overlooked as a theological innovator and pillar, but his rightful place is at the head of the table. If we look closely, however, we may recognize that he has been seated there all along.
