Petrochronology is a rapidly emerging branch of Earth science that links time (ages or rates) with specific rock-forming processes and their physical conditions. It is founded in petrology and geochemistry, which define a petrogenetic context or delimit a specific process, to which chronometric data are then linked. This combination informs Earth’s petrogenetic processes better than petrology or geochronology alone. This volume and the accompanying short courses address three broad categories of inquiry. Conceptual approaches chapters include petrologic modeling of multi-component chemical and mineralogic systems, and development of methods that include diffusive alteration of mineral chemistry. Methods chapters address four main analytical techniques, specifically EPMA, LA-ICP-MS, SIMS and TIMS. Mineral-specific chapters explore applications to a wide range of minerals, including zircon (metamorphic, igneous, and detrital/Hadean), baddeleyite, REE minerals (monazite, allanite, xenotime and apatite), titanite, rutile, garnet, and major igneous minerals (olivine, plagioclase and pyroxenes). These applications mainly focus on metamorphic, igneous, or tectonic processes, but additionally elucidate fundamental transdisciplinary progress in addressing mechanisms of crystal growth, the chemical consequences of mineral growth kinetics, and how chemical transport and deformation affect chemically complex mineral composites. Most chapters further recommend areas of future research.

Deformation and arc magmatism are two fundamental processes of tectonism. Deformation is expressed as fault systems and shear zones that evolve to accommodate plate motion and arc magmatism is expressed as voluminous intrusive suites. Major questions remain, however, as to the relationship between deformation and arc magmatism. My dissertation investigates plutons and shear zones using structural geologic, geophysical, and petrochronologic tools, to observe how they are expressed temporally and spatially to assess feedbacks between arc magmatism and deformation.Chapter one used gravity investigations to observe modern magma emplacement and storage at Laguna Del Maule. Laguna Del Maule is a volcanic field (LdMVF) within a modern magmatic arc, where rhyolitic volcanism is associated with strike-slip faults. Our new density model of the broader LdMVF captured what we interpret as at least two magma bodies at different stages of maturity. From these data, we concluded that multiple discrete plutons presently exist in the LdMVF. Chapters two, three, and four used structural and geochronological methods to investigate how pluton emplacement is connected to ductile shear zones by investigating exhumed examples of magmatic arcs emplaced during oblique convergence. Chapter two was a collaborative study with Dr. Claire Harrigan at Boise State University. Together we used petrochronology to investigate high-temperature crustal strain partitioning and localization on the micro- to macro-scale using the western Idaho shear zone (WISZ), west-central Idaho. By integrating the geochronometric, geochemical, and microstructural titanite record, we documented the local preservation of titanite related to magmatic and deformation processes. Importantly, our results provide a date for the onset of deformation in the WISZ, confirming tectonic interpretations of WISZ deformation as a separate event from terrane suturing. Chapter three and four expanded this work to the Cretaceous intrusive suites of Nevada in the central United States Cordillera. Chapter three is a first order investigation of middle and Late Cretaceous granodiorites of northwest Nevada. Chapter four expands on this original dataset to track the spatial-temporal patterns of pluton emplacement and deformation using fabrics preserved within the Sahwave Range intrusive suite and the Power Line intrusive complex. We determined that the Sahwave Range intrusive suite and Power Line intrusive complex record two distinct dextral transpressional deformation events, ~100 Ma and ~88 Ma, and provide a missing link between the Sierra Crest shear zone in the Sierra Nevada batholith and the western Idaho shear zone in the Idaho batholith.

In Earth evolution, mountain belts are the loci of crustal growth, reworking and recycling.
