Dalam sirkulasi darah didapatkan sel darah dan cairan yang disebut plasma. Sel darah tersebut terdiri dari eritrosit (sel darah merah), leukosit (sel darah putih), trombosit (sel pembeku darah). Pemeriksaan hematologi adalah pemeriksaan yang bertujuan untuk mengetahui kelainan dari kuantitas dan kualitas sel darah merah, sel darah putih dan trombosit serta menguji perubahan yang terjadi pada plasma yang terutama berperan pada proses pembekuan darah. Pemeriksaan hematologi dapat dilakukan secara manual yang memakan waktu cukup lama dan tidak menunjukkan ketelitian serta ketepatan yang baik. Akhir-akhir ini dengan perkembangan teknologi dalam bidang laboratorium, jumlah sel darah dapat dihitung dengan metoda otomatis yang disebut blood cell counter.
