One of Amazon's 100 Best Books of 2020. “The people of this community are stifling, and generous, cruel, earnest, needy, overconfident, fragile and repressive, which is to say that they are brilliantly rendered by their wise maker, Catherine Lacey.” --Rachel Kushner, author of The Flamethrowers A figure with no discernible identity appears in a small, religious town, throwing its inhabitants into a frenzy In a small, unnamed town in the American South, a church congregation arrives for a service and finds a figure asleep on a pew. The person is genderless and racially ambiguous and refuses to speak. One family takes in the strange visitor and nicknames them Pew. As the town spends the week preparing for a mysterious Forgiveness Festival, Pew is shuttled from one household to the next. The earnest and seemingly well-meaning townspeople see conflicting identities in Pew, and many confess their fears and secrets to them in one-sided conversations. Pew listens and observes while experiencing brief flashes of past lives or clues about their origin. As days pass, the void around Pew’s presence begins to unnerve the community, whose generosity erodes into menace and suspicion. Yet by the time Pew’s story reaches a shattering and unsettling climax at the Forgiveness Festival, the secret of who they really are—a devil or an angel or something else entirely—is dwarfed by even larger truths. Pew, Catherine Lacey’s third novel, is a foreboding, provocative, and amorphous fable about the world today: its contradictions, its flimsy morality, and the limits of judging others based on their appearance. With precision and restraint, one of our most beloved and boundary-pushing writers holds up a mirror to her characters’ true selves, revealing something about forgiveness, perception, and the faulty tools society uses to categorize human complexity.

The heart of Charles Pearce, the author, is to know that each reader will be encouraged to embrace their unique purpose within the local church. This manual traces the struggles and triumphs of a consecrated soldier of God. His personal struggles centered on his low self-esteem that began in childhood and worsened as he became an adult who compared himself to others. His ministerial struggles emerged from the discrepancy between his expectations for the people who frequently warmed the pews of his early churches and their perceptions of their Christian responsibilities.

From Pew To Pulpit written by Clifton F. Guthrie and has been published by Abingdon Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-11-01 with Religion categories.

A down-to-earth, practical introduction to the ins and outs of preaching for lay preachers, bivocational pastors, and others newly arrived in the pulpit. Recent years have seen a considerable increase in the amount of financial resources required to support a full-time pastor in the local congregation. In addition, large numbers of full-time, seminary trained clergy are retiring, without commensurate numbers of new clergy able to take their place. As a result of these trends, a large number of lay preachers and bivocational pastors have assumed the principal responsibility for filling the pulpit week by week in local churches. Most of these individuals, observes Clifton Guthrie, can draw on a wealth of life experiences, as well as strong intuitive skills in knowing what makes a good sermon, having listened to them much of their lives. What they often don't bring to the pulpit, however, is specific, detailed instruction in the how-tos of preaching. That is precisely what this brief, practical guide to preaching has to offer. Written with the needs of those for whom preaching is not their sole or primary occupation in mind, it begins by emphasizing what every preacher brings to the pulpit: an idea of what makes a sermon particularly moving or memorable to them. From there the book moves into short chapters on choosing an appropriate biblical text or sermon topic, learning how to listen to one's first impressions of what a text means, moving from text or topic to the sermon itself while keeping the listeners needs firmly in mind, making thorough and engaging use of stories in the sermon, and delivering with passion and conviction. The book concludes with helpful suggestions for resources, including Bibles, commentaries, other print resources and websites.

The church is filled with broken people, victims of trauma and unresolved issues that have put a clog in the church engine. The one place a person can find relief from their pain has sadly become a Sunday-morning soap opera where we cannot wait to hear the outcome of a persons indiscretion. The private pain that pew members experience is real, unspoken and devastating. The time has come to break the silence and do real talk, about what we all know is going on. Private Pain in Public Pews says it all this book is a must read that gives remedy, hope and insight that is sure to give you a new perspective on church and life itself.

A View From The Pew written by Richard Kerger and has been published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-05-05 with Body, Mind & Spirit categories.

Several years ago, Richard Kerger was reading before going to bed when he got a clear message from God. Not a trumpet blast or a burning bush but a thought in his mind that he had not had but was nonetheless there: "I want you to write a book about what you believe." He was shocked, to say the least, and his initial reaction was to say, "Who will care about what I believe?" He got an immediate answer. The unspoken voice said not to worry about it, and so he did not. The result is this book which is derived from many sermons by many different pastors, from reading and rereading the Bible, from countless other books of religion, and from a lifetime of experiences which have given texture to the words that he heard spoken and that he read. The author is no expert on religion, but he has written hundreds of articles on various topics and a couple of books on nonreligious matters. He truly hopes this will help others focus their beliefs as they sit in their pews.
