This volume is part of the definitive edition of letters written by and to Charles Darwin, the most celebrated naturalist of the nineteenth century. Notes and appendixes put these fascinating and wide-ranging letters in context, making the letters accessible to both scholars and general readers. Darwin depended on correspondence to collect data from all over the world, and to discuss his emerging ideas with scientific colleagues, many of whom he never met in person. The letters are published chronologically: volume 24 includes letters from 1876, the year in which Darwin published Cross and Self Fertilisation in the Vegetable Kingdom, and started writing Forms of Flowers. In 1876, Darwin's daughter-in-law, Amy, died shortly after giving birth to a son, Bernard Darwin, an event that devastated the family. The volume includes a supplement of 182 letters from earlier years, including a newly discovered collection of letters from William Darwin, Darwin's eldest son.

Long-term care is an increasingly important issue in many contemporary welfare states around the globe given ageing populations. This ground-breaking book provides detailed case studies of 11 EU-member states’ welfare regimes within Europe to show how welfare states organize, structures and deliver long-term care and whether there is a social investment perspective in the delivery of long-term care. This perspective is important because the effect of demographic transitions is often used as an argument for the existence of economic pressure on welfare states and a need for either direct retrenchment or attempts to reduce welfare state spending. The book’s chapters will look specifically into how different welfare states have focussed on long-term care in recent years and what type of changes have taken place with regard to ageing populations and ambitions to curb increases in public sector spending in this area. They describe the development in long-term care for the elderly after the financial crisis and also discuss the boundaries between state and civil society in the different welfare states' approaches to the delivery of care.

With increasing urgency, decisions about the digitalized future of healthcare and implementations of new assistive technologies are becoming focal points of societal and scientific debates and addresses large audiences. Decisions require a careful weighing of risks and benefits and contextualizing in-depth ethical analysis with robust empirical data. However, up to now, research on social assistive technologies is mostly dispersed over different academic fields and disciplines. A comprehensive overview on discussions regarding values at stake and ethical assessment of recent developments especially in healthcare is largely missing. This publication initiates an interdisciplinary discourse on ethical, legal and social implications of socially assistive technologies in healthcare. Contributions include perspectives from nursing science, social sciences, philosophy, medical ethics, economics and law to present an – to our knowledge – first and comprehensive overview on different aspects of the use and implementation of socially assistive technologies from an ethical perspective. It combines practically relevant insights and examples from current research and development with ethical analysis to uncover exemplary moral tipping points between promotion of participation or well-being and risks and damages to these values. Die Krankenpflege führte in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland lange ein Schattendasein. Weder Ausbildungsberuf noch Gegenstand eines Studiums, befindet sich das Berufsfeld seit langem institutionell zwischen allen Stühlen. Eine verbesserte Qualifizierung der dort Tätigen war seit langem dringend geboten. Das war die Situation, in der die Robert Bosch Stiftung Ende der 1980er-Jahre begann, sich für Verbesserungen einzusetzen. Wie das im Einzelnen geschah, ist eines der Themen dieses Buches, das im Auftrag der Stiftung entstand. Gleichzeitig erzählt es eine umfassende Geschichte der Qualifizierungsbemühungen in der Pflege. Diese erhielten durch die Vereinigung der beiden deutschen Staaten weitere Impulse, da die DDR schon früh einen anderen Weg in der Pflegeausbildung beschritten hatte. Die schwierigen Aushandlungsprozesse von Krankenhausträgern mit Verbänden sowie staatlichen und kommunalen Verwaltungen um die (Sub-)Professionalisierung der Krankenpflege werden hier gut lesbar dargestellt. Da die Probleme in diesem Berufsfeld trotz erreichter Verbesserungen immer noch nicht umfassend gelöst sind, kann das Buch Orientierung für die gegenwärtige gesundheitspolitische Diskussion bieten.
