The following section lists, describes and illustrates the precursors of Impressionism, from Bonington to Turner and from Corot to Whistler. The main section of the book gives detailed biographies of the Impressionist painters, illustrated with the artists' key works and including lesser-known artists and artists from Britain, Germany and America who are associated with the school. The important artists are given very full treatment and illustration, with the article on Monet occupying twelve pages.

"Expressionism is not only an artistic movement but a permanent tendency in art that has been characteristic of Northern Europe in times of social stress and political disturbance. The first Expressionist movement incorporated Art Nouveau and Symbolist influence, including Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Ensor and Munch. The artists of Die Brucke in Germany and, France, Rouault and Picasso (in his Blue Period), led up to the formation of the Blaue Reiter group in Munich just before the Second World War. In Vienna, Schiele and Kokoschka rose to prominence, while in Paris exiles such as Soutine, Pascin and Chagall brought Expressionism westwards. This book covers the painters, and graphic artists, sculptors and architects, writers and playwrights, cinema producers, designers and musicians of Expressionism."--BOOK JACKET.

Paris 1874, Boulevard des Capucines: a group of artists that were to radically change the rules of the art world, Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas and Frédéric Bazille, mounted an exhibition in the studio of photographer Félix Nadar. The exhibition proved to be a veritable scandal that filled critics with indignation, and they contemptuously labeled the paintings "impressionist" because they had been badly constructed and were ambiguous. In fact, the technique they had adopted was utterly original because it entailed painting outdoors--en plein air--using newly available apparatus and tools such as a portable easel, ready-to-use paints in airtight tubes that came in a whole range of bright colors, and paintbrushes with broad, flat bristles held in place by a metal ring.

Defining an artistic era or movement is often a difficult task, as one tries to group individualistic expressions and artwork under one broad brush. Such is the case with impressionism, which culls together the art of a multitude of painters in the mid-19th century, including Monet, Cézanne, Renoir, Degas, and van Gogh. Basically, impressionism involved the shedding of traditional painting methods. The subjects of art were taken from everyday life, as opposed to the pages of mythology and history. In addition, each artist painted to express feelings of the moment instead of hewing to time-honoured standards. This description of impressionism, obviously, is quite broad and can apply to a wide array of styles. Nonetheless, it remains a very important school in the annals of art. Any current or budding art aficionado should become familiar with the impressionist movement and its impact on the art world. This book presents a sweeping study of this artistic period, from its origins to its manifestations in the works of some of art history's most revered painters. Following this overview is a substantial and selective bibliography, featuring access through author, title, and subject indexes.
